How to see if the world is round

In a few simple steps you can figure out if the world is flat or not.

With all the hubbub surround B.o.B’s assertion that the world was flat, and Neil deGrasse Tyson’s rap in response, it seemed apt to come up with a simple test that he can do.

  1. Go to the bottom floor of a really tall building with a clear sight line
  2. Wait until a sunset
  3. Watch the sunset
  4. Go to the top floor of the building
  5. Stand in nearly the same spot, just higher up
  6. Watch the sunset again

Why does the sunset occur twice? If the Earth was truly flat, no matter how tall the building was, the sun would only set once. It would pass underneath the plane of the Earth and disappear until daytime again.

xkcd does a really good breakdown of the math behind why this works. In addition, it’d be a really good date idea and a way to make up whatever beef you have with Neil deGrasse Tyson. ER.
