#Hustle is the answer. What is the question?

This is NOT the dream.

This photo, here is NOT the dream.

It’s 5:56am and it’s cold, really bloody cold, and I am stood on a platform in January 2016 listening to a podcast about doing what you love. Then there comes the announcement that the train is running late. You’ve heard it before, but quite literally

Fuck my life.

I took to Facebook to tell the world how much my life sucked and friends responded with the obligatory “like” to show they felt my pain. By the time I got to my meeting, with a jerk who I didn’t even like or want to do business with, I was already pissed off.

And still came the words in my head. “Do what you love.” It was at that moment, at the age of 35, that I said to myself ‘Fuck it’. If I’d been an employee I’d have resigned that day, though as I already worked for myself, this just wasn’t an option. Up to this point I had had a pretty rough journey by anyone’s standards, and had to ask myself: “Why have I done all of this?”

At that moment I was honest with myself. I was unhappy, unhealthy, doing something I didn’t like each day, all to get an outcome that in reality, I didn’t want.

Clever kid, huh?

The challenge when you’re 35 is that you have some big old responsibilities. Mine included my family and home as well as a range of other significant costs associated with my life. I couldn’t just stop, there was no option to turn my back and walk away, the only possible thing that I could do, was to find a way to move forward. That was the day I began to do the thing I now know is hustle.

I decided to focus on an area of my business that I had an interest in, and began to build a global event. This wasn’t anything I’d ever planned, but the decision was made and I had no intention of this being a little event that passed under the radar of my industry. My aim for this event was for it to be massive. We were going to bring a thousand people together for a truly unique experience.

People told me I was crazy, people told me that I’d never pull it off, people told me that it was going to fail. And you know what?

They were right.

I totally overestimated my ability, I totally oversold what I thought I was capable of and the event didn’t even get moving let alone take off. Think of one of those massive Airbus A380’s being towed by a family saloon. It was like that but only worse.

Failure. Again. It fucking hurt.

But, this time it was different. This time I had purpose and I knew why I was doing it. I had realised that I wanted to do something that I loved, something that mattered to me, something that would allow me to help other people. I took a long hard look at myself, and I saw where it had all gone wrong. The outcome was shit, but the journey was epic.

It’s now August 2016 and we’re now in the midst of the most exciting and crazy journey of my life, putting together a whole new event that is going to help me empower and transform the lives of people like you. I realised that I love helping people — in fact I love helping people more than I like money, and more than I like myself.

So, now I’m here to introduce you to HUSTLE.

(Before I go on, here’s a quick heads up, Hustle isn’t just reserved for those crazy entrepreneur people. Hustle is a mindset, it’s an attitude and you need it. It’s not even an option in 2016/2017 to not have this is your toolbox. In fact, I’m even teaching it to my five year old son. Everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY needs Hustle in their life.)

You could be a student, a mum, an employee within a big business, an entrepreneur, a solopreneur, a network marketer, an author, a blogger, a podcaster, or just someone that wants to KICK ASS; everything we touch on in this article is relevant to every one of you. It’s relevant because if you want to get ahead in your life, to live a life that is different to the one you currently have then in order to get there, you’re going to have to hustle.

If you’re an entrepreneur then I think it’s easier to see, but it’s no more relevant. An entrepreneur has to wear so many hats — marketing, sales, finance, strategy, purchasing and in today’s business world, social media too. Facebook pages, Instagram and Pinterest accounts, Twitter profiles, the list of responsibilities goes on, and still you are trying to win business.

If you’re an employee it could be that you want a promotion, a pay rise, more learning opportunities or even just a totally new job. If you’re one of many in your business you need to ask yourself:

“Am I the first name they think of when they consider who to offer a job promotion?”

If the answer is no, then you’re in the right place in order to get to where you need to be. You need to become the go-to person in your department, team, business or even industry. You need to be visible, people need to know who you are and what you represent.

Remember this:

“People simply cannot buy you, your products or your services if they don’t know who you are. It’s your job, and no one else’s, to make sure that they know what you do, and how you can help them.”

Graduates, Graduates, Graduates. YES — I’m talking to you.

Hustle lends itself so well to graduates of the world, in fact hustle might be the only thing keeping you from your ideal first job. Have doubts about why you need hustle to get your first job? Read on…

In 2013 I was asked by one of my clients, a global fashion brand, to work with them as they recruited a high number of people into their UK operations.

Now, there’s a unique challenge with Luxury fashion, and that is that nearly everyone on the planet seems to think they’re perfect for the job. In reality they’re not. Not even close.

I understand their plight, they’ve studied hard, they’ve been to a good college, they’ve got great grades, and now they want a job. But the bit that gets missed is this:

· The right college
 · The right grades
 · The right amount of work

does not get you a job, it gets you to be considered for an interview. No one EVER got a job because of their grades, it is the real person, their personality, their communication and all the extra icing on the cake that got them the job.

For the majority of recruitment processes, there comes a point where the hiring manager has to make a final choice between two, sometimes three, excellent candidates. Following applications, screening, interviews and sometimes assessments, there are normally two people left standing and that’s where the battle is won. That’s the moment that you need to stand head and shoulders above the competition.

Returning to my fashion based example, one particular recruitment process ran its normal course and reached the point of final selection between two hugely talented individuals. One candidate showed up, armed, loaded and ready to go, but the other turned up thinking it was in the bag, mainly because she had the grades from a great university and therefore thinking she had done enough to succeed. The plain and simple truth is that you can never do enough.

fucking day to see the end result.

In 2016 we’ve just seen the greatest sporting event on earth come to a close, and there is no better example of hustle than sport stars — perhaps some of the greatest hustlers on earth. These are athletes who have committed everything, and I mean everything, to achieving their goal of winning an Olympic medal. Imagine if your every waking moment (and in some cases sleeping moments) were designed and structured and focused around reaching one specific target. Every meal, every activity, every training session and every rest period, all executed with the intended outcome in mind.

The hustling wasn’t seen on the track or in the pool in Rio, the hustling has been the last 2+ years where the training, dietary, psychological regimes and sessions have been planned to ensure that they are absolutely in the prime position to win an Olympic Gold. Look at the great Michael Phelps:

He swims a reputed six hours a day, six days a week whilst consuming 12,000+ calories every 24 hours. This guy is laying it all on the line, every day. He’s sacrificing huge areas of his life, because his desire to live out the end he has worked towards is more important that a burger with friends or Happy Hour drinks.

When he started out, maybe he wasn’t aiming to be the greatest Olympian of all time, I am sure at the beginning it was to train to win an Olympic Gold, to stand on the middle step of the podium, to hear his National Anthem and to see that all the hard work played out.

You may not be an Olympian in the making, but you do have a choice — to live your life with your end goal in mind or to not. Michael Phelps has only become the greatest Olympian of all time because of his laser guided focus on the task in hand.

As time has gone on he has developed a degree of invincibility and that can happen in your world to, as you build up momentum and successes in your chosen path. What we do know about Michael Phelps is that he left nothing to chance, he left nothing in the training pool and he swam to 100% of his capability.

In short, Michael Phelps believed he was the greatest and his competition did to. When you can intimidate your competition just by turning up, you know your hustle has worked.

Whilst talking about “the greatest” it is impossible not to mention the incredible words of Mohammed Ali, who told the world every time he had a microphone in his hand, that he was in fact the greatest. Over and over he told the world that he was the best there ever was and the best there ever will be. He knew his destiny, he had it planned out and he took steps every single day in the gym, every single meal, every single decision, in every sparring session, to ensure that one day the world would remember him simply as ‘The Greatest’.

What can you learn from Michael Phelps and Mohammad Ali?

In short, a lot. These are two incredible examples of people who wrote their end game. They knew that they would define their sport because they made a decision to do so. In your case it could be your company, department, industry or profession, whatever your circumstance or environment, you can make a choice to be the absolute best that you can be. Do you belong amongst your greatest competition or colleagues? Are you the one that stands out? The one that people are ‘fearful of’, or would not want to go up against?

As Henry Ford once said:

“If you believe you can or you can’t you’re right.”

As Henry Ford once said:

“If you believe you can or you can’t you’re right.”

Do you believe?

Do you believe you are the greatest? Or perhaps more, importantly do you believe that you have what it takes to get to the end you dream of? Starting at your end lets you break down what you need to achieve, and allows you to track your progress towards your goal.

When I was younger, I used to say “I want to be rich”. Many of you may have said the same thing, but what was it for? There are plenty of ways of getting rich, but not all will take me to the end I want, and not all of them will let me live the actual life I imagine for myself. By this I mean:

There are:

rich loan sharks
rich used car salesmen
rich network marketers
rich investment bankers
rich lawyers

Not all of these are going to be right for you. Some are not possible for you right now, I mean you can’t be an investment banker if you failed basic math. But that doesn’t mean you can’t be incredibly wealthy, hey Hustler?

But to get there you ABSOLUTELY have to know what your end looks like, you are able to take the necessary steps towards your prize; a limitless life on YOUR terms.

A person I think who gets this so right is Ramit Sethi, the founder of the “I Will Teach You To Be Rich” brand. Ramit focuses on how to have a Rich Life, now it’s not what you’re thinking — this is a not a ‘Get Rich’ thing, instead Ramit talks about enriching your life. His take on this is fascinating and it’s seen him top the New York Times Bestseller list, with his book by the same name, you can view this on Amazon.

Your end could be a specific house, a car, a particular school for your little people or it could be a holiday at a specific hotel or a 1st class flight to your dream destination. It could also be that you want to be there on sports day for your children, or something as simple as taking them to school, and not as was my case stood on a freezing cold train platform pre-6am.

What does your end look like?

Imagine, for one minute you had no limits, no restrictions, nothing to hold you back and you could achieve anything you wanted, what would that world look like for you? Go ahead, grab a pen and write it down — free style this bit.

What would your house look like?

What car are you driving?

Where would your kids go to school?

Where do you spend your weekends?

Who do you spend your time with?

What do you do with them?

What do you look like — did you get fit? Wait, did you get ripped?

Where was your last holiday?

How many trips or vacations have you had?

You need to write it all down — the more specific you can get the better and by that I mean, not ‘A trip to NYC’. You need to visualise what hotel (this is the one that I use for visualisation purposes) you want to stay in. You need to know what your house looks like, the sofas in your lounge and the bed linen on your king size bed. Go and find websites, run visual tours.

You are quite literally able to see with your own eyes what you’ll be seeing when you achieve dream life. Visualisation has never been this easy. I literally have folders of houses, cars, planes, vacation destinations and photos that inspire the way my family will live. I am working towards an utterly specific aim, and I know exactly why I’m getting out of bed every morning at 4am.

Your end might look nothing at ALL like this. It could be that your end is you walking through the door of your current house knowing that you’ve just paid your final mortgage payment and at the age of 42 you’re now totally, 100% debt free. Or it may be that your dream house is your current one, but with a new kitchen and an extension — your end is exactly that, YOURS. We’re all different, we all want different things, and that’s just brilliant, because it makes this world and our opportunity all the more amazing.

Why do we do this?

On that cold morning, when my train was late and it was now standing room only, I asked myself perhaps the most important question of all:

Why? Why am I doing this?

Sure, I wanted to get rich I’ve already made that stark admission, but there had to be a better way for me than this. Commuting every day with my family time in the hands of track repairs or industrial action.

Why did I want the money, why did I want to send my children to private school? Why? Why? Why?

It dawned on me that I wasn’t totally sure, so I began to read. I came across a quote which summed it up perfectly:

“He who has a why can endure any how.” Frederick Nietzsche (German philosopher)

What will happen as you embark on this journey to your greatness is that you’re going to get bashed and beat-up along the way. You’re going to have shit days and I mean really, really shitty days — days when you can’t really be bothered by any of it. But, it is your ‘WHY’ that will see you through your darkest days and by working from a place of passion, even the big knocks will seem small.

So herein lies the ultimate question —

“If money were no object, what would you do?”

Often, life in today’s world isn’t about money, unless your end goal is to own a sports team or an airline. For most normal people (and by normal I mean people just below Richard Branson and Elon Musk) our decisions are often based upon taking back control — to live life on our terms. To have a life we can create, shaped around our values, ambitions and requirements.

Indeed, my work has allowed me to express my personality, to be creative, to form my own ideas, make my own mistakes and latterly after years of investing in myself I can begin to see a debt free life of financial control, but that hasn’t happened overnight, and what’s more, it hasn’t happened yet. BUT I can see where it’s going and the action I am taking is seeing me create a life with purpose and a life on MY terms.

My why was to build a life so that my family would never have to learn the lessons I did. My why was to serve people, to empower them with knowledge I had gained to help them live THEIR ideal life. In the past I had businesses I didn’t love and it showed. I didn’t show up all the time because I didn’t LOVE what I was doing. Sure I faked it for a bit, but in the end the truth always prevails. And there was no getting away from the truth.

When I started my recruitment business, I was passionate about what I did, it was infectious, in fact, I was infectious. I was working from a place of utter passion. People used to look at me slightly strangely when I talked about it. I mean, I was a recruitment consultant for hell’s sake — people should have hated people like me, yet I just loved it and people seemed to love me for it. But then it all changed.

It was a warm Spring morning in 2008, I remember I’d just had a great meeting with a new client, I got back to my office with a note saying to call a specific client.

I won’t bore you with the details, as they’re really not important, but this was a longstanding client who I’d done a lot of work with, and I had been running a particularly tricky recruitment process. There were two people in the process.

One was a Grade A everything, top of class at one of the world’s top universities and she knew it, the other was someone who had a compelling why. She was also capable, she could definitely do the job in hand, but her why (for me at least) stood her head and shoulders above the other person.

Instead they offered the job on the grades and university. The A Grade student didn’t make her six-month anniversary. The girl, who had been in a children’s home, self-funded her university degree, and managed three jobs to get there was turned down.

It dented my faith in what I was doing. As a recruitment business it shouldn’t have mattered, we made the money, we did our job, we moved onto the next vacancy, but as a person, to me it mattered and I began to question the WHY of what I was doing.

I didn’t know it then, but that call changed everything.

So, yea. I quit. I quit to follow the why, my real why. That girl, the person who was the underdog became a beacon for my future, to support the people who are prepared to do whatever it takes, to focus on their goals (whatever they may be) and do everything I can to help them get there.

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” — Harold Whitman

If you’re one of those people, then welcome to #TeamHustle because this (and by this, I mean your new life) is about to happen. Your life is real and if you got this far in this article you’ve already started on the journey.

So, now we know the end…let’s get moving and get back to the beginning. You’ve got a life to make happen.

Have you ever heard about Imperfect Action? I know I hadn’t, but…

‘Imperfect action’ is a thing. Experts, coaches, leaders will tell you to take action even when it’s shit because that action is better than no action at all. There are a few exceptions, but in the main they’re telling you to make your move and get started, the stuff that isn’t quite right can always be adjusted later. Taking a step towards your goal is better than standing on the sideline.

Want a case in point? I’ve got a confession, I’m a little bit addicted to The Biggest Loser USA. It’s screened in the UK on one of our satellite channels and I LOVE it. The journey is incredible, where I get to sit on the sofa for an hour and watch people nearly kill themselves because THEIR end is within sight.

They’re taking action, and my god in the beginning it is so far from perfect you can’t believe it. Here we’ve got people that in some cases are 400+ lbs, they’re running/walking/dying on a treadmill with a gladiator shouting at them to keep moving.

You see, every single step the contestant takes on the treadmill is quite literally a step closer to their BRAND NEW LIFE.

So, what we don’t want right now is a list of your bull shit reasons as to why this can’t happen now. This excuse crap is what got you here in the first place and we’re now going to work together, to see you HUSTLE your way to your brand new life.

This isn’t going to be an overnight thing, the 400lb person, doesn’t become a 185lb one overnight, it takes consistent, determined focus every single day to get there. There are days when he’s struggling and you will too, but for you it has to start today. So what one thing can you do today that will see you take a step closer. Here’s some examples of things you can do today:

· Quit smoking. No really — quit it. No excuses. What can you do with that money?

· Go to the gym, or if that’s not going to work — put on your trainers and run.

· Write a blog

· Buy your new web domain

· Write your first chapter

· Speak to your boss about your review

· Read a book

· Download a podcast

· Subscribe to a course

I don’t care what it is right now, do not leave this point without taking one single step towards your end. You will thank me for this. This is what HUSTLE is ALL about.

Take this article for example. Is it perfect? Of course it’s not, and the eagle-eyed out there may spot spelling, grammar or some just shit writing that I could have delivered better. But there’s the point. You’re reading this and if I hadn’t have got this finished today you wouldn’t have seen it. So you’re one of the very people I wanted to reach out to.

SO whilst it might be shitty in places if you’ve got this far, then I’m living out my dream of inspiring people through my words and actions.

We’ve got your end in sight and now we need to build momentum

Knowing why you’re doing what you’re doing and knowing where you’re going are both critical to Hustle, but what is actually more important than all of this is working. As Gary Vaynerchuk once said;

“You’ve got to work your fucking face off.”

No words on a page, no amount of hyperbole, no coaching sessions are going to work for you if you don’t do the work and that’s really what Hustle is all about. Every minute of every single day is spent working towards your goals with an almost laser guided focus. If what you’re doing today is taking you forward to your End, then keep on doing it. If not, why not?

“You have as many hours in a day as Beyonce”

At the age of 34 Beyonce has probably achieved more in her years than most people will achieve in a lifetime, and whilst it’s a fun quote, there’s a huge amount we can take away from this.

How can one person be a:

Singer
Songwriter
Actor
Charity founder
Entrepreneur
Wife
Mother.

All of this in 34 years? That has to be a joke, right? WRONG. There is no joke, but it does take utter dedication to creating the Beyonce life, and of course she works. Every single minute she can. You could even suggest she “works her fucking face off”.

Beyonce has a plan, or in fact she has multiple plans, and she takes steps every single day whether it is writing a new album, running her clothing line or raising money for charity. There are tactics that a true hustler will use to maximise their time, which will be touched on later but the long and short of it is they work, and it starts early. Really, really early.

So, if you’re not a morning person you need to become one, and fast.

“But, I need sleep” says the voice in your head, “I’m tired.”, “Just five more minutes”. Let’s get this straight you don’t need more sleep, you need a new life, you need new opportunities, you need to progress your life from where it is to where it is going. And it starts whilst every other person with an ‘OK’ life is sleeping.

Have you ever had to catch one of those early morning flights, and by early morning I mean one that you have to set your alarm for pre-3am? How hard was it to get up knowing you were getting the first plane out in the morning? I am pretty sure that it was one of the easiest things you can do. Holiday’s will always be fun, of course they will.

But what if a bog-standard Monday morning could be the same as your 3am wake-up to get to the airport?

What if a random Monday in January had the same effect? (No, really — think about it.)

What if your work was so amazing you’d get out of bed at that time because you couldn’t cope with being in bed one minute longer?

I understand that we’re all different, and sleep is needed for health and well-being but this doesn’t mean if you’re a 9 hours of sleep a night type person that you can’t retrain your needs over time. If you could take your 9 hours down to 6 hours a night, you just found yourself 21 hours a week, which is an incredible 1092 hours a year or 45 additional days a year.

45 extra days a year was just found in a heartbeat, what can you achieve with those extra 45 days before you even start focusing on maximising your time when hustling?

But I’ve always needed 9 hours sleep.

So retune your way of thinking. I bet you used to need something else — cigarettes, alcohol, caffeine, carbs? Was it hard giving it up, sure it was but was it worth it? Almost always. But as I’ve said before, it will be worth it.

You may need to make changes to support this, you may need to improve your diet, you may need to up your levels of gym work, you may need to go to bed earlier, you may need to drink less caffeine but your new routine should support the fact that you’re going to be getting out of bed a whole lot earlier, with more energy to boot!

Take the quite phenomenal Oprah, she functions on around 5 hours of sleep a night and as the saying goes:

“No one ever made $1 billion lying in bed”

Oprah talks regularly on her morning routine, the one she has created to support the small amount of sleep required, but Oprah is not alone. Marissa Mayer, the Yahoo CEO needs only between 4 and 6 hours a night, Jack Dorsey the Twitter founder was once working 20 hours a day (10 at Twitter and 10 at Square), Donald Trump takes this even further needing only 3–4 hours a night and Tom Ford of fashion fame is also in the 3-hour club.

The list is endless, but in short if you want to be successful you need to get out of bed. To sign off this part, I’m going to use another Gary Vaynerchuk quote, because it conveys exactly what I’m trying to say:

“I’ve got a dream worth more than my sleep”

So, if you’ve got a dream, you’ve got your WHY, you’ve got your target in your sight, and you’re moving towards your target, then surely that’s enough reason to change your routine and get out of bed?

Ready for some bad stuff? Haters gonna hate.

You have friends right now in your life that are going to struggle with the new you. It may even be members of your family or work colleagues. They’re going to say really nice things like “You’re fine just the way you are” But, as Jim Rohn famously said:

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

So this may mean for you that you need to take a long hard look at who you spend time with, are these people that are going to help you hustle your way to your new life? Are they people that will hold you accountable? Are they people who will support you?

I’ve got another confession about when I did a bad job of this.

I met my wife back in 2001 and she was, as the saying goes ‘the woman of my dreams’, I really felt that I’d met my person. We got together, moved in together about 9 months later and then we started to get comfortable.

Eating late at night, my wife a former athlete put on weight, and fast. When you were used to training 6 times a week at competition level, the stop has a drastic effect. At one point she was around 25 lbs heavier than when we’d first met, but of course, I told her ‘you’re fine’. But she wasn’t fine with her. She got angry at herself and decided to take steps to correct what had happened.

In the run up to our wedding she joined Weight Watchers with the target of losing nearly 2 stone to get back to her original weight and that meant she’d need to be way more careful about what she was eating and drinking. What she needed was my support, what she got was a total lack of it. I’m not proud, by the way.

The whole point of Weight Watchers and similar groups, is that there is a support network, a group of people that would meet once a week — the same way Alcoholics Anonymous is there to keep alcoholics away from alcohol. I’m no expert in this area but if an alcoholic hangs out with people who drink they’re way more likely to drink.

I carried on eating the wrong sorts of food, and used to question what she was buying from the supermarket with encouraging phrases such as “Why on earth are you eating that?”.

What an ass.

Thankfully I saw her initial progress, her weight loss was happening and she was getting happier and to her utter credit she was bang on her target weight for her wedding day. With my support, it could have been much, much easier for her — and I’d have lost some weight as well!

So, you may need to find some new friends or at least some new people to support you in your quest to achieve your aims. This is harder than you’d expect but in 2016 you have a whole host of resources available to you.

You can listen to Podcasts from leading entrepreneurs, my personal favourite is EO Fire, where the enigmatic and inspirational John Lee Dumas interviews leading entrepreneurs 7 days a week. He digs deeper to understand topics such as their biggest mistakes, their ‘Aha Moment’, and advice on how to build things from the start!

In fact, John’s own story is pretty incredible — he built EOFire to a seven figure business in only a few years, having served in Iraq as an Officer in the US Army. I must say, I utterly love podcasts — they’re available when I am, high impact and they get you in the space on your terms. Whether you’re heading to work, stuck on the train — you’ve got high impact, motivational information quite literally in your pocket!

Blogs, blogs, blogs and few more blogs! They’re everywhere from the hard hitting entrepreneurs of this world, such as Grant Cardone, Gary Vaynerchuk and one of my personal favourites the utterly driven Kat Loterzo.

Webinars, Facebook Groups, Online Courses and real live Events, which leads me almost perfectly onto…

1. You’re going to Learn, learn, learn and learn some more. Our speakers, experts and leaders have been hand selected to deliver you the most epic ideas, thoughts and content. It will teach you in ways you never thought possible. Think of THE HUSTLE LIVE as a one day Degree in creating your kick ass life.

And when you go back to your office, apartment or family you’re going to be able to share these ideas with the people that matter. You’ll not only be changing your future but those of other people around you.

3. Inspiration. Oh my, this is the real deal! For us everything starts with inspiration, it starts with that moment where you make the decision to be brave and take the first step, as Lao-Tzu said:

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a first step”

Whether THE HUSTLE LIVE is your first step or your hundredth I promise you this will fuel your passion to live your incredible life.

4. Build your new network. I said earlier that you’re going to need to meet new people, meet individuals that are going to know the brand new you.

You’re going to create lifelong relationships built upon your new ideas, your new values and your new destination. You will connect with people that are going to transform your future life, they’re going to support you plus you’re going to be a member of our members only network, reserved for attendees of our events.

Put 2nd November 2017 in your diary, it will be the day you’ll look back on and know that it made such a difference to that brand new you.

Remember that Hustle is always the answer.

James.
