I’m not sure that’s true, actually, nor do I really think it should be. I don’t mean this in a snarky “museum shows are all esoteric and heady and designed for art history majors” way. I mean that some of the strongest shows I’ve seen have embraced a more specific audience they’re trying to reach. Not every show has to appeal to everyone, as long as there’s a variety that covers as many audiences as possible.
