“We wouldn’t get along; we’re too different.”

The consequences of premature judgement.

Meet Alex.

He’s a new (but extremely shy) student that recently transferred to a popular school nearby.

Alex was very quiet and often kept to himself, avoiding others and staying at the back of the classroom.

The other students quickly concluded that he was unfriendly and not interested in making friends.

Because of this judgment, they didn’t make any effort to include him in conversations.

Even the teachers assumed that Alex preferred to be left alone and didn’t encourage group participation.

About a month in, the class was assigned a project and sorted into groups.

Alex was paired with three other students.

Straight away, his group was unhappy, assuming Alex wouldn’t contribute.

As they started working though, they saw that Alex was extremely knowledgeable about the project topic and had loads of ideas.

Their group scored the highest grade in the class, largely due to Alex’s contributions.

The group was embarrassed, realizing their premature judgments were wrong.
