Regarding Tarou…
I think it’s pretty hard not to be in agreement with that last statement. That guy dreams big though.
One thing that you note that I’d have to agree with is that despite all the rough bits that (mostly Oi-chan, but) our Donuts Quintet deal with, they still keep on pushing on because it’s what they like to do. It’s hard not be enthralled whenever Director Kinoshita gets in his zone and relays his desires and dreams so colorfully. Those are “that’s why I work for this guy!” moments. And of course, the homages to various people who’ve been involved in anime in some way, shape and form make it a nice love letter for people who just enjoyed creating something that we ended up enjoying. It made me want to see how an Exodus anime would have been done, for sure.
And it makes me wonder how a show in general would realistically show how someone deals with a job they don’t enjoy, but still have to continue for various reasons. We get a brief example of this from Oi-chan’s older sister when she comes to visit, as there’s a hint of just wanting to get away from her OL job in any capacity. It’s effort that’s frustrating and depressing, among other things, but I also think it’s a story that needs to be told seriously, and P.A. Works hinted at what could be.
