EDUCATION: WOMEN ARE CHANGING THE GAME.

On the 21st of July 2017, I attended the 12th Convocation Ceremony of Covenant University and had the privilege of processing alongside the Vice Chancellors of other Public and Private Universities, and their representatives. It was an exciting time with great speeches to cheering parents (among whom was Gov. Ayo Fayose and other dignitaries). However, one thing stood out for me from the statistics below:
Total graduating students: - 1,125*
First Class awards - 188
Second Class Upper - 568
Second Class Lower - 322
Third Class - 47
*We note that there is a fair balance between the population of male and female students here.
Of the students who got First Class degrees, I can safely say that about 90% of them were females. This was so glaring that the VCs present were loudly commenting and laughing about this pattern even in their own Universities. It seems to be a pervasive matter that more females are now pursuing education and comfortably outperforming the males.
The only exception was in the Engineering Department where there were significantly more males getting First Class degrees than the females, which may just be the case of more males in the Department.
Clearly, women are more hungry to get an education and even go further to be the best at it. I remember sitting through my Public Policy courses for my Masters program several years ago and realizing that in two years, over 80% of my classmates were female. So clearly, there is a global phenomenon going on and women are changing the game.
While I think it is just the evolving nature of society, and a daring response to the injustices women have suffered for centuries due to a wrongly constructed socio-economic and political system, it would be interesting to study the effects of this in smaller spaces of decision making. #JustAThought
