For my Level 1 Coaching Football I have been tasked to run a 15 minute session called “Traffic Lights”

Traffic Lights

Initial Set Up

-In a safe area every player has a ball.

-When coach shows a red cone players must stop with foot on ball.

-When yellow cone is shown, players must change direction.

-When green cone is shown, players must increase speed.

This is my session plan for “Traffic Lights”

> Introduction of myself and session, including demonstration and asking participants questions such as “What is an attribute of a good dribbler?”

> 1 minute of myself standing stationary and raising cones.

> 1 minute of moving around the area raising cones to promote dribbling with head up.

> Hold up 2 cones without explanation. Call players in and ask what they thought it meant. Explain it’s their interpretation e.g. green and orange cones could mean “turn & accelerate” or “accelerate then turn”. This allows ownership.

> 1 minute incorporating 2 cones as well as 1.

> Call group in. Introduce a 4th (blue) cone which instructs them to do a piece of skill. Ask group for examples e.g. step over.

> 1 minute with the usage of 4 cones.

Added Progression

1. Ask players to get into pairs (half group will be wearing bibs, other half wont). One ball from each pair is removed so one person is dribbling while other runs, when blue cone is raised it now means you must communicate with your partner and pass them the ball. The other player now dribbles with the ball. (2 minutes)

2. People without bibs both lay out 1 red and 1 green cone each. All players now dribble around area with ball, when coloured cone is raised players must dribble to a matching cone, stop the ball and touch the cone. 1 point is achieved for the 5 people who get to the cone. (3 minutes)

Debrief

Using 4 section board to discuss the social, psychological, technical and physical aspects of the session. As questions such as “What did you do well?” & “Was it difficult dribbling with your head up?”

I’d appreciate any feedback on my session or and advice here or at my twitter.

Thanks, Charlie
