How Scream 6 Could Be AMAZING
Scream has, since it’s inception in 1996, been a horror movie whodunit. It’s the driving buzz around the casting, synopsis and trailers. With 25 years of Scream in the world, the question that begins to crop up is: How do we keep this fresh?
Oh, and yes we will be touching on spoilers for the franchise. So beware.
First, let’s go back to the original. Imagine you just got home from the theater (cell phones were not what they are now, back then) and you call your friend who just got home from their screening. You proceed to freak out and yell “OH MY GOD, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT WAS BILLY AND STU?!” There’s a pause on the phone. “What? No, it was Randy and Stu. What are you talking about?”
Boom. Let the conversation commence.
Fast forward to the impending Scream 6. That’s what we need. In an time where spoilers are EVERYWHERE and leaks are rampant, a logical counter-attack to that is to have MULTIPLE endings for the film. Not just filmed, PREMIERED. Now, this is not the first time that this would have been done in film. The movie CLUE did this, and did not bring the different endings together until the home release.
As a fan, this would be insane. As a business decision, it’s a no-brainer. We live in a world right now where the conversation moves SO quickly from movie to movie, show to show, that there needs to be a way to capture the buzz and keep it on your film. If people were busy discussing, fighting, and fawning over what their favorite ending was for Scream 6, it’d be the talk of that year. People would be going out MULTIPLE times to see this film, and try to “collect” the endings. Money. All. Day.
There is a caveat. The endings would have to make sense, and be MOSTLY solid. CLUE did this well, and I think Scream could also. Keep resurrections out of it, unless it can make sense like Billy’s and Charlie’s.
Not only do I think they could pull this off, I WANT to see it. As someone who loves the original, but has had overall interest in the series start to fade as time goes on, I need to see something different from these films. That’s what Scream has always been about, reinventing the wheel and breaking the horror mold.
Sure it would do wonders for Scream 6, but imagine the buzz behind Scream 7, to find out which ending is canon.
I’d be in. All day. It’d be a Scream.
