7 Years

Yesterday marked 7 years since I got my first chance in music. I feel humbled and blessed to have crossed paths with and befriended so many incredible people, captivating characters, and unbelievable talents. Nothing has taught me more about life — it is impossible to be exposed to the people and experiences that music presents and not have them shape you (for the better) and teach you valuable lessons.

I was recently asked for advice in an email from a new artist. I responded 5 minutes later with this list:

  1. Learning is everything and must be a constant
  2. Understand culture, past present and future, deeply
  3. “Work like there is someone working 24 hours a day to take it away from you” — Marc Cuban
  4. Stay passionate and don’t lose your love for the music
  5. Your reputation and/or brand is everything. If it sucks, everything sucks
  6. Consistency is the key to proving that you’re serious about your talent
  7. Trust your instincts
