Centuries ago the english word AWFUL was simply a description of being "full of awe." Gradually, negative applications of the word became more and more predominant. So today something AWFUL is horrible, terrible, or even simply "bad" (as in "This sandwich is awful.") So we no longer use AWFUL for transcendent and "awe-inspiring" experiences. For that we have gradually come to use AWESOME in many contexts.
Thanks for the awesome article about your experiences.
