I’m a moderate, and back in 2012 I made a post on FB about how I thought the Republican party was basically doomed to either drastically change its direction to the point where it was not the party it had become in 2012, or else it would perish as a party — either way, basically, I felt its trajectory was unsustainable.
I feel that I am largely vindicated this year. Yes, it may be a fluke that Trump was nominated, but it cannot be a fluke that there’s a huge disconnect in the GOP voting base — the people who turn out in droves for the primaries, and the rest of the GOP that apparently just couldn’t be arsed to come to the primary elections in enough numbers to drown out that vocal minority (probably because neither Cruz or Kasich was compelling enough).
What I think is most important to note about this personal response, however, is that Luis says his politics haven’t changed — and that’s true for many and myself, as well. If a candidate can come along who is able to articulate some of the conservative social and fiscal values that I have, I’ll vote for them, just as most old Republican constituents will. We are just increasingly aware that the GOP is unlikely to be the party which will field such a candidate.
