The disadvantage of this system is that it encourages highly “blinded” research — you go down a rabbit hole, pursuing an objective, whereas the push for papers of any kind encourages broad research across the domain. A mix of both investigative forms is probably healthiest, with more or less of one or the other depending on research objectives.
