You’re not being condescending except in the last question, where of course you’re being condescending.

Empathy itself is a perception, not an act. Read my reply and get back to me; we might like to believe that all the devils of history have lacked empathy for their victims, but victorious historians bemoan the fates of their state’s rivals, criminals express remorse, and basically life is not nearly so cut and dry as that.
