Nothing lasts forever. True some people seem to have a perfect life and things are always going for them, but realistically speaking is this really so? — Hardly. We are all beset by the everyday problems of life. Even those among us with the best attitudes have down days when success seems just out of reach.

Loss of a job, an ending marriage, troublesome kids or a failed exam may leave you feeling defeated and helpless. Although you may feel a bit like a failure, there are things that you are doing right. Here are 10 things that you can use to measure how well you are doing in life. Surely, you are doing well. Use this list to find comfort and work on the areas in which you may be weak.

You’ve learned from your experiences

The road of life although well-trodden is no smooth ride, but it’s worth it. No matter how bad a situation is, there is always one thing you can take away — a lesson. Reflect on your success and your defeat. Remember those things that when you first attempted or even after trying repeatedly that are now second nature. Everything happens for a reason and they have all contributed to where you are and who you are today. Endeavor to let your successes and defeats, bolster you for those to come. Think about what you’ve been through and what you’ve been able to do and pat yourself on the shoulder.

You aim to improve in all aspects of your life

The whole fact that you may be feeling a bit sad or down because you feel that you aren’t achieving gives evidence of your ambitiousness. If you are always aiming to be better and more successful then the journey to success has not only begun but is well along. Don’t give up. Success is that much sweeter when you thought you couldn’t do it.

You are/were gainfully employed

Whether you still have a job or you recently lost it, you are in a very good position. You are among those who have gotten a job and therefore, however hard it may be you’ll be able to get another all over again. Why not see this as the opportunity to venture into the field that you love, perhaps doing what you really love to do. The knowledge, skills, and experience you gained from your employment are things no one can take from you and they make you a valuable asset to any future employer. They are also something to feel good about especially if you not having a job is not as a result of your actions or lack of it.

You have a zest for knowledge

With online tools at your fingertips, you can learn about anything you want to. This learning can take place at your own pace wherever it is convenient to you. Make the best use of all the opportunities to learn that come your way. Truly successful people have to be knowledgeable, at least in the area of their expertise. The wider your knowledge base, the better for you. Remember success is first measured in the things money cannot buy and knowledge and the desire for knowledge are two of those

You have goals

Goals keep you focused. Although we all lose sight of our goals from time to time, don’t give up on them. Ensure that your goals are specific, measurable, realistic and give yourself a time in which to achieve them. Don’t be disheartened if you don’t meet the deadline, keep working at it. To get to your desired place, you first have to know where you want to go. Then you can go about thinking about how you want to get there.

You have good qualities

Love, the ability to forgive, kindness, mildness, self-control are all some of the qualities that lead to true success. You may not build that empire by being very kind but you’ll feel good about yourself and whatever you are able to achieve especially when you see the smile on other people’s faces when you have been able to share with them. Being able to forgive keeps you sane. It is also a sign of great strength. It demonstrates your ability to shed unnecessary weight even if it is only for your sake. If you are able to forgive yourself you won’t stay in the haze of thinking you’re unsuccessful for very long.

You have some form of spirituality

A life lacking spirituality tends to lack direction. There must be a moral code that you choose to live your life by to be successful. How well you stick to those beliefs is an indication of how successful you can be or already are. If you believe in someone greater than yourself, a spiritual being, that will keep you from drowning in your own problems. You can focus on the fact that you have someone greater to live for than yourself and someone is always there interested in you and rooting for you. Spirituality gives you a purpose and a hope.

You have food, clean water, and clothing

This is especially something to be proud of if you are able to provide them for yourself. Don’t wait until when you feel the pangs of hunger or thirst to appreciate food. There are many people who work their fingers to the bone for one meal a day. Clean water is also a scarce commodity in some areas. Clothing too is another issue. If you don’t wear the same outfit everywhere you are going give thanks. Life would get very cold without clothes.

You have a support system

Whether it’s your family, friends, husband, children, church/other group or that one best friend, there must be someone that is always there for you. Even if it isn’t the same person, there is always someone. Look back at your darkest hours, when you thought you just couldn’t make it. What brought you through? Was it that kind smile from the stranger that whizzed by in a taxi? Was it the last tip you got before closing your shift? Or maybe it was your child’s little arms clung tightly around you in a loving embrace.

What are some of the things you have that money cannot buy? Those are the things that make you truly rich. Count those and work toward your goals and watch the feelings of success grow.

Best!
