Less than a month after Ja Morant was accused of aiming & pointing a gun at the Indiana Pacers’ bus, he’s back in the headlines. The 23-year old superstar was considerate enough to leave other professional athletes out of the mix this time. Instead, he threatened a Finish Line employee, mall security guard, and a 17-year old.

I find these stories both wildly entertaining and extremely sad at the same time.

So Ja’s mom was doing some shopping at the mall and started having problems with an employee at the Finish Line. I’m no sneaker head, but I’ve been in my fair share of Finish Line’s & I have absolutely no idea what a woman in her 40’s could possibly argue about with a minimum wage store employee. Maybe the employee said Ja’s new sneakers were mid.

That’s when Ja showed up to the mall, apparently about nine people deep, and wanted to have a talk with the Finish Line employee. On their way in, Ja and his crew were stopped by the head of security at the mall. After some words were exchanged, Ja basically told the Memphis Paul Blart “sleep with one eye open tonight buddy”.

Imagine you and your kid were shopping in a Memphis mall, and out of the corner of your eye, you spot your kid’s hero, Ja Morant. He looks like he’s got a crowd of people around him. You see your kid’s eyes light up and the two of you rush over to try and get through the crowd for a picture. Then you realize … this is no crowd. These are goons. Your kid just witnessed Ja Morant verbally assault a segway-riding mall cop and he will now, in all likelihood, become a victim to street violence. All because of Ja Morant.

It’s starting to make sense why Ja Morant claimed that he and the Grizzlies were “fine in the West”. This man has much bigger fish to fry than simply beating the Suns, Mavericks, Warriors, Nuggets, Clippers, Lakers, Trailblazers, and Kings. He’s got mall cops and teenagers to beat up!

Which brings us to the most puzzling story of this entire saga — Ja Morant allegedly assaulting a 17-year old and brandishing a firearm after a heated back-and-forth during a pick up game. This is the whole story:

The 17-year old was guarding Ja Morant (arguably a top 10 player in the NBA right now) in a pick up basketball game. It sounds like Ja checked the ball a little too hard, and the kid returned the favor, causing the ball to hit Ja in the face. That’s when Ja socked the kid in the jaw and repeatedly punched him alongside his friends. Ja then went to his house, grabbed a gun, and brought it back to the park to let the 17-year old know … I won’t shoot you, but I will shine a laser at your eyes.

I have a few questions regarding this story.

  1. Why is Ja playing pick up basketball with children? Obviously it’s not a community event like Drew League.
  2. Why does Ja constantly feel the need to prove his street credibility?
  3. Does Ja own any ammunition? Or are his guns simply used as threatening props.

This 17-year old was probably stoked to see Ja pull up to the park he always hoops at. He had a chance to guard one of the best players in the league. Of course he was going to play as hard as he could so hopefully he would have a few stories to tell his kids one day about how he “locked up Ja Morant in a pick up game.” Now he gets to tell his kids that he locked up Ja Morant so badly that Ja had no choice but to threaten his life.

Most people play in the NBA as a way to take them out of the streets. Ja plays in the NBA to hopefully one day become a street legend.
