Robert De Niro Faces Backlash Over Controversial Remarks on Native Peoples
Hollywood, CA — Robert De Niro, renowned actor and lead in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film Killers of the Flower Moon, has found himself in hot water after making a contentious comment about Native Americans. In a recent interview, De Niro said he “feels no sympathy for the Native peoples,” a statement that has ignited controversy given the subject matter of the film.
Killers of the Flower Moon delves into the chilling events of the 1920s, highlighting the tragic murders of the Osage tribe in Oklahoma after vast oil reserves were discovered beneath their land. The murders, now known as the Osage Indian Murder Investigation, involved the killing of the tribe members to seize their wealth, and is one of the most heinous crimes against Native Americans in the country’s history.
Given the sensitive and harrowing subject matter of the film, De Niro’s comments have struck a nerve among critics, fans, and indigenous communities. Many argue that such remarks diminish the significance of the story being told and insult those whose history is intertwined with such brutality.
Film director Martin Scorsese, known for his long-standing collaboration with De Niro, did not stay silent on the matter. In a statement released earlier today, Scorsese criticized the actor’s views, saying, “I’ve known and worked with Bob for decades, but I cannot condone or support such comments. Our film aims to shed light on a dark chapter in American history and to give voice to the Osage people and other indigenous communities that have suffered. Such remarks are not reflective of the film’s message or my personal beliefs.”
Lily Gladstone, a Native American actress who has gained acclaim for her roles in films highlighting indigenous narratives, also expressed her dismay at De Niro’s comments. “It’s disappointing to hear such ignorance from someone in De Niro’s position,” she said. “Given the film’s context and the importance of understanding and acknowledging the atrocities committed against the Osage people, I sincerely hope De Niro makes no money from it.”
Online, reactions have been overwhelmingly negative towards De Niro’s comment, with many calling for a boycott of the film. Indigenous activists and organizations have also condemned the actor’s words, urging Hollywood and the general public to be more respectful and informed about the complexities and histories of Native American communities.
De Niro’s representatives have yet to release a statement in response to the controversy.
