Leave the internet alone!

So, early this week I watched this video from The Game Theorists

After I watched this video, I got super mad. Just to be clear, I didn’t got mad at the channel who made the video, I actually loved the video and it was made, I got mad at the topic, the Media Bias. I got mad because it is topic that I know something about it, none of the facts that he showed in the video is news to me, but the video illustrated and talked about it so well that it sucker punched me. So instead of just rush and write a new post about it, i decided to wait a few days and think about it, so I tweeted all my rage away and for the rest of the week I just spend some time thinking about it and how could I add something to the discussion.

I’m glad I did it.

So I’m going to talk about somethings that are addressed in the video and mix it up with the few things I’ve learned about media and communication, and some that I`ve noticed while creating and consuming content on the internet.

The Viral Trend

On the beginning of the video Mat talks about another video he made named “Gamers: You’re being played” where he discuss how the game Industry started to make their games controversial so people would talk about them and the game would get free marketing boost.

This type of viral content is more and more used specially in the dark world of marketing and advertising. After YouTube was born and the use of social media grown some people started to think “why does this video of a cat playing piano is so popular?” or “How does this video of a kid biting his brother’s finger got so many views?”. More important they thought “How can we use this to make our brand stand out in the weird world of the internet?”.

Long story short, they wanted to know what is sharable.

Why is this important?

Because this, rule media world. Every content now is created to be sharable, it doesn’t mater if it`s printed or posted on blog, if it`s a image or a video, if it`s a facebook post or tweet. The main goal is to make people share what they read to as many people they can. Want some examples?

GTA is the classic example of “hated by everyone but the kids”. Basically everyone who plays video games loves this game, me included. Not because I’m into the story or the missions but because I can shoot the shit out of people in that game. The reason that I love it is also the reason why parents and a lot of other type of parents and conservatives hate it, not to forget all the cases that they blamed violent video games for influencing kids to go and shoot people at school (when they should actually blame their gun control laws and psychological problems).

The second one, a video campaign for HBO is the most used example of successful viral campaign ever, for all the right reasons! This video is awesome! I had at least 3 teachers who used this video of example.

Going on…

Haters gonna Hate

If there is something that Perez Hilton, E!, trolls, TMZ and Nicole Arbour knows, is that hate content is the nº 1 in click rates, more even than gossip and lame made up rumors.

Hating is easy, you don’t need reasons, you don’t need to research the topic, you don’t need to think and you don’t need talent. Anyone can hate everything, and if you record it on camera, edit, upload on youtube and call it Dear Fat People, BAM you get a hit shared video that will put your name on the map for a month, but for all the wrong reasons.

That’s what Jimmy Kimmel did in his 3 videos about Youtube Gaming plataform on his show. He talks about something he didn’t know and didn’t research it and, adresses the huge amount of people who watches those videos, the same people that made late night talk shows popular on youtube. He basically spits on his own plate making the majority of people who watches his channel — and probably makes the TV show going — mad at him. He tried to make things right inviting Markplier and MissesMae to teach him why does a lot of people watch Let’s Play videos, but as Jojo would say, it was too little too late.

Don’t hug me I’m Scared

“But why all the hate?” You are probably asking. Well my fella reader check MatPat video again, while Youtube claims that every year the number of hours people spend watching videos is increasing up to 60%, the number of hours people are spending watching TV is dropping more and more. If people stop watching tv, tv companies starts to loose the precious money and stocks value.

They are scared, or as we say in Brazil, they are “com o cu na mão” (roughly translated to with their assholes on their hands). They are full aware of the treat that Youtube, Netflix and other types of online platforms represent to their 60 years empire, so we are starting to see some desperate attempt of reassuring their crown, but heads will roll baby.

I wanna be a Youtube Star

How they are trying to not loose those views and money? Well, we already covered the trash talk those fuckers way, by covering bad stories and trash talking about Youtubers and internet content creators in general they expect to take the credit of those who produce the content and those who watch (I have really strong reasons to believe that this won’t work but I’ll talk about it later).

There is also the invite that webstar to our movie technic. Since they know Youtubers, Viners and Instagram celebrities has a lot of fans they started inviting them to the “tradicional media” world expecting that their massive legion of fans will consume their products, and it works.

EXAMPLE TIME

There are books ( a LOT of books)

There are movies

Since this post is already really big and almost no one will get to the end I want to talk about the Kardashians, I mean the Jenners. Yes, they became famous because their sisters are famous, and yes, they came from the TV show, but the Jenner sisters real success is online. They are two of the biggest icon for teenage girls and have a lot, like a LOT of instagram and twitter followers, brands call them to be their models because of those fans, not the tv ones (not even gonna get started at the Kyle Jenner lip challenge). To better illustrate it, this week each five of them launched an app that their fans had to buy to get insights of their lifes, like videos, photos and music playlists, Kyle Jenner`s app is the most downloaded of them.

Then we’ll win

First they ignore you,

then they ridicule you,

then they fight you,

then you win.”-Ghandi

BUT HOW CAN WE WIN?

We will win because, nature of course. Not to be dramatic but not everybody lives forever, and not everybody works until the end of their lives. More and more millennials (why the fuck are we always in the equation) are taking over jobs and earning their own money and doing things they love (like Youtubers) and watching what makes them happy like Pewdiepie videos.

Even if they fight they can`t stop the change, nothing stays forever the same specially in the era that we live. The TV won`t die, just like the radio didn`t died, but the TV as we know it, has it`s days counted.

No drama tho.
