It has been two weeks since Modupe introduced Tunde to the joys of his canteen and Tunde was ecstatic he could get so much food for as low as N500 that it seemed too good to be true, but he enjoyed it all the same and Modupe enjoyed the benefits. Modupe had become his best friend for introducing him to this canteen and he was amazed at the amounts he was saving weekly from patronizing them.

Modupe on the other hand, was overjoyed, he had been getting lunch for the past two weeks without spending a dime and he had netted approximately N500 from these two weeks alone. Life couldn’t be any better and his wallet was getting filled up quickly.

That is, until Titi, the customer service rep, found out about the little arrangement that Tunde had with Modupe and wanted in. Tunde, being Tunde, was very loud about how much he was saving and how he could cut out breakfast from his morning routine because he was sure that Modupe would get him affordable lunch at the office. Titi really needed to cut costs, she had just moved in to a new apartment away from her parents and the N2000 per lunch meal was murdering her finances.

She approached Modupe; “Modupe, how far? Please when you are sending for food for you and Tunde, send for my own o, I’ll give you N100 for your airtime too”

Immediately she said those words, the cogs in the machine that is Modupe’s brain started to turn at an alarming rate. He began to see a possibility beyond just getting free lunch. He could get free money too!

In that moment, Modupe started to think in terms of profit and loss, supply and demand, procurement and distribution. In that moment, Modupe, at 28 years of age, became a Youth Entrepreneur.

Modupe immediately sprung into action, seizing the opportunity while it was still fresh in his head. He figured that if Titi, the customer service rep, was willing to ‘dash’ him N100, which was equal to his transport to and from the office every day, the rest of the staff wouldn’t have any problem doing the same.

He sent out a simple note:

“Hi, this is Modupe, the MD’s assistant, if you’re interested in buying good food, very filling, from a clean canteen, please send N600 to me through Tunde so I can place the order”

He waited, wondering if he had overstepped his boundaries, wishing he could cancel his note and generally telling himself how he should learn to be content with what he was getting. After all, he was just two weeks young in the establishment, why would anyone listen to him?

The thought had barely registered when he saw Tunde approaching him from the banking hall with a weird look on his face and Modupe became worried he had upset him, that maybe someone insulted him for trying to fleece money out of them.

Modupe was about to apologise for not informing him about the note before he sent it when Tunde thrust six N1000 notes in his hands and said “They said I should give you from the banking hall, that they want food too, ten of them.”

The shock in Modupe’s face was visible enough for Tunde to ask him if everything was ok. He had expected maybe one or two people to be interested, but ten? He wasn’t ready at all. All he could think about was the fact that he was looking at a potential gross of N3500 in one day.

Modupe didn’t know it yet, but a service was born.
