From Incarceration to Inspiration

Ayana’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the human spirit’s capacity to triumph over adversity. Having served three years in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Ayana’s personal experience with the criminal legal system ignited her determination to create positive change. She founded Grieving Back to Life to address a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of the lives of women impacted by incarceration — the profound grief and loss they face.

A Beacon of Hope

Ayana’s story is not just about overcoming her own challenges; it’s about using her experiences to guide others towards healing and growth. As a grief and bereavement counselor, Ayana has taken the pain of her past and transformed it into a platform for change. Through Grieving Back to Life, she aims to help justice-impacted women navigate their grief, trauma, and losses. Her vision is clear: to assist women in finding perspective on their pain, reclaiming their peace, and moving forward with purpose.

Grief is not only the loss of someone you love, but it is the loss of many significant things we lose in our lives, such as our freedom. — Ayana Thomas

Redefining Grief and Empowerment

Grief, as Ayana eloquently puts it, isn’t solely about the loss of loved ones; it’s the loss of freedom, identity, and countless other essential aspects of life. Grieving Back to Life’s mission is to provide these women with the tools they need to work through their pain, set meaningful goals, and find success despite their struggles. Ayana’s living example serves as a powerful reminder that progress and happiness are attainable, even in the face of the most challenging circumstances.

“I am not only here to help set goals, but I am a living example of what grieving through your life and your pain looks like. You can still have a purposeful life. You can still be successful in your pain. Grief is hard. Finding help doesn’t have to be,” says Ayana.

Changing the Conversation

Ayana’s work isn’t just confined to her organization; it’s about changing the broader dialogue around grief and empowerment. By bringing the collective grief of incarcerated women into the spotlight, she’s dismantling the stigma and fostering a supportive community. Through her resilience, dedication, and commitment to her cause, Ayana is actively making the world a better place for everyone.

In honor of Black Business Month, we celebrate Ayana and her outstanding work with Grieving Back to Life. Her journey from incarceration to empowerment is an inspiration to us all, reminding us that where life breaks us, we can emerge stronger, wiser, and capable of profound change. As shecontinues to uplift the voices of her sisters impacted by the criminal legal system, she is an embodiment of the spirit of resilience and the driving force behind a brighter future for all.
