Vampired out for Halloween, circa 1990's

Sunday, Sunday — so good to me

It’s Sunday — the day of awesome TV! From The Sopranos, to True Blood, to The Walking Dead — Sundays have always been my go-to must-see TV night. I think it started with the X-Files and The Simpsons — then moved right on into Animation Domination. But after that “Osage County” episode of American Dad — something clicked in my brain. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Seth McFarlane, and I’m fairly sure we would be fast friends if we ever met. He has a wonderfully sick sense of humor that I can totally appreciate. I appreciate his flawless taste in music (see Ted if you haven’t for the Hootie and the Blowfish karaoke scene) and apparently we have the same heroes (see same for Flash Gordon cameo). But something about that “Osage County” episode turned me off. Nonetheless, I do admire his talent.

It’s rare that I really get into something that isn’t a cartoon (thank you, Seth McFarlane, for spoiling me). But The Sopranos really fascinated me. Granted, Tony was a sociopath, but the late, great James Gandolfini made you believe that he had a soul. Favorite scene, when Tony and Christopher were disposing of Ralphie’s body and Christopher pulled off his toupee! Now that was great television! Because of this amazing series — I read Martha Stout’s book, The Sociopath Next Door. If you’re a fan of the struggle between good and evil in all of us, and why some people don’t have a conscience, I highly recommend it. It definitely made me think.

I am already mourning the loss of True Blood in four more episodes but I am thrilled that the show has really upped the ante this season — after, in my very humble and very RIGHT opinion, jumping the #Sharktopus last season. This season feels like we have finally come home to the good times in Bon Temps. After reading Charlaine Harris’ series, I have definite ideas of how I would like to see this bad (in a good way) thing end. Sarah Newlin as vampire Jesus was unexpected, but beloved. And can I just say — Eric Northman, I am so freaking glad we have a cure for Hep-V. I hope you get to drain her dry and be saved! How many of you feel out of your chairs when Russell Edgington ripped the spine out of the TV anchor, gave a chilling monologue, and then in true Southern style asked Tiffany for the weather report. BEST. SCENE. EVER! Denis O’Hare was amazing in this role! His creepy caring of his beloved Talbot around in Waterford crystal was only topped by his stunning karaoke performance of “You Light Up my Life.” If only we could bring him back for a few more shows.

After True Blood finishes its crazy ride, I only have The Walking Dead left to obsess about. The comics rock, of course, and to think that the whole damn zombie craziness begins in Cynthiana, KY is just poetry to me. I am, of course, one of those crazy “If you kill Daryl, we riot” fans. There’s just something about this show that gets into my psyche and does some real serious damage. Who are the walking dead — the zombies or the survivors? The writing on this show is just freaking incredible. Even with the slow action last season, I can’t say I felt cheated. Viva la Carol — the amazing Melissa McBride — another Kentuckian. I can’t wait to see how the group gets out of Terminus. Kudos to Chris Hardwicke, too! May your empire rival that of Will Wheaton’s! It’s good to see a self-confessed Geek on top for a change.

So if you are looking for me — I’m unavailable from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. EST most Sundays. Don’t call, don’t text, don’t Facebook, don’t open — I’m not dead inside but you will be if you bother me.
