Captivating Faith and Healing at St. Antony’s Shrine
St.Antony’s church is located in Uvari, a fishing village in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district. Uvari is a unique spot in Tamil Nadu with a St. Antony’s Church close to the beach. People were known as bharathar’s of the “Neithal” area in ancient Tamil history. Before being converted by the Portuguese, Uvari’s historical name was Obber Pattanam, which was ruled by the Pandian kingdom. From June 1 to 13, Uvari is a place of a special local festival attended by thousands of people. The other event takes place in the final week of January or the first week of February. It extends 13 days and begins three Sundays before Ash Wednesday. The devotees are handed a blessed oil made from neem. Some devotees apply the oil to their heads, while others drink it. They are believing that their sickness will be cured. Like Hindu temples distribute Neem theertham.
