Laws of Life [Interview]

Michael Makinde — Attorney — Los Angeles, CA

How do you define success?

Success is difficult to define and encompasses many elements. However, I believe that for a man to begin his long journey towards success, he has to be able to materialize his words, desires, and personal thoughts into real life things. In a way, success is like magic — the ability to make the unseen appear. Unlike magic, the two keys to success are effort and self-discipline. If a man can get good at these two, he can have anything, including success, if he truly desires that. Also, Oprah once said that we all have many different selves within us who all have different goals and interests. For example, you might have an athlete who also likes marine biology. Success is being able to express all of those different selves, to the fullest, within one life time.

In your life, how important are role models and mentors?

I have never been one to look for role models because I believe that every man is his own man. There are people who excel at certain things, and certain men who have certain styles that I greatly admire. On the other hand, it is important to see people who look like me and people who come from where I come from excel. This is proof or validation that the things that I do can be fruitful if I just press on. Mentors are essential in life. There is nothing more reassuring than having someone you admire take great interest in you.

What’s your advice for the next generation?

The next generation should continue to press on, knowing that they will have so many opportunities in this world if they decide to take advantage of the groundwork that has already been laid for them. We have witnessed men and women come from nothing, raised by single mothers, and forgotten and counted out by society, become great. My generation benefited from the fight for equality in education and the battle for access. Now that we have that access, today’s fight is to ensure that the next generation has equality in the boardrooms, where the most critical decisions are made today. The next generation should know that they can inherit this greatness if they so desire. They should also know that there will be many people selling them a different path and distracting them from their inheritance. Although the world will be a different place, it will be their choice to make, and I hope that they embrace the challenge to carry that torch that lights the way for those behind them!

Your thoughts on overcoming struggle?

Struggle is part of life. Everyone goes through it, but it is what defines you ultimately. A struggle allows you to show your character and to show what sets you apart from everyone else. There is great opportunity during a struggle, whether personally or professionally.

What is great about being a black man?

Being a black man feels limitless — especially in 2015. There is an unspoken confidence that comes with being a black man who has experienced any level of success. Being an educated black man also gives you great perspectives in life and allows you to build certain bridges that only you can build.
