Students: Top Tips for Going Out
Heading to Birmingham for university? Heard amazing things about the night life? Here are our top tips for going out in the city as a student.
1.) Make the most of fresher’s week
You probably won’t get a week like it again in your life. With so many new people and a night out planned for every night of the week it’s a great opportunity to socialise and have fun. If you love going out then you will love Birmingham and all that it’s night life has to offer but if going out isn’t really your thing maybe have a look at the options and choose a couple of the nights that you think you will enjoy the most. Don’t feel pressured to go out every night and to stay out late either, which brings me on to my next point:
2.) Stay together and stay safe
Birmingham is a brilliant city but it’s also a big and busy city and if you’re from a small town then nights down Broad Street may be a little daunting. Stay together with your group of friends and ensure that you have a way of contacting each other if you get separated. Don’t leave clubs alone and never walk home on your own. Always use a trusted taxi company and wave-goodbye to an imaginary housemate when you’re leaving for a night out. It’s also good to go out with a group of both guys and girls — you tend to get less hassle and unwanted attention this way.
3.) Try somewhere different
Birmingham is great for big student nights out pretty much every day of the week but there is a lot more to Birmingham night life than student nights. Go for drinks at Brindley Place or the Mailbox if you’re feeling fancy. Try a night of live music and dancing at the Jam House or go for cocktails on Bennett’s hill.
4.) Prepare for Pre drinks
Pre’s are a big part of a night out so think about what your plan is. It’s more than okay to go to a pre’s and then not go on the night out and it’s also fine to go to a pre’s and not drink. Just know where you stand and what you are/aren’t drinking before the pre drinks. If you are confident and stand by what you’ve said your friends shouldn’t care whether or not you’re drinking like they are or whether you’re taking part in all the drinking games. At pre’s banter can be flowing just as much as the alcohol is but you shouldn’t feel pressured into doing anything you don’t want to or feel uncomfortable with. It can be hard but stand your ground.
5.) Serve others
Nights out are a great way of being able to serve your friends and show them that you care and are there for them when they may have had one too many drinks. Use your nights out as a way of having fun together with all your friends but also showing God’s love to your friends. You’ll be surprised how much people will open up to you and want to have conversations about God with you when they’ve just come in from a big night out and are now safely back home eating junk food in the kitchen.
