We are all guilty of the New Year Resolutions that never end up happening. “I’m going to lose weight and start eating healthy this year” or “I’m going to quit shopping and start saving!!” Too many words, not enough actions! Thankfully, we’ve crafted a few tips that have helped our team stay focused on our resolutions for you, so at the end of the year, we can both be proud of all you have accomplished!
The #1 thing to remember is to ALWAYS be realistic.
If you set unrealistic goals, you are going to have an unrealistic expectation to meet them. You’ll also want to make sure your goals are measurable,so it’s harder to break them! If you set realistic expectations for yourself with corresponding benchmarks throughout the course of the goal, it’ll be much harder to get out of the habit of crushing them!
Make a plan.
Don’t come up with your goals on New Year’s Eve or even New Year’s Day and expect for them to be meaningful goals that you are going to focus on or even remember throughout the entire year of 2020. Figure out your main goal, first. What is the end result you are wishing to achieve? Once you know exactly what you want, write out a scheduled plan with a timeline attached to it. Tangible, short-term goals that will lead you to ultimately achieving your larger, year-end goal. And don’t forget to celebrate the small wins! Positive reinforcement is the BEST motivator!
Always create a “Pros” and “Cons” list.
This will help to show a visual representation of all the good things that will result once you reach the goal you have set for yourself. And it will also help show you exactly why you are trying to reach these goals. When you’re backed with a why and a how, all that’s left is to DO!
Talk about your goals.
Tell your spouse, friends, family, etc. Letting everyone around you know about your 2020 goal will not only make you be responsible for yourself, but the people who care about you most will be holding you to your word as well. Find an accountability buddy who doesn’t just hear about your goal once at the beginning, but with whom you check in with regularly regarding progress!
Don’t give up.
We have all heard that it takes 40 days to build a new habit. Make sure that you don’t give up within the first few weeks because it’s difficult or you don’t have the motivation to keep pushing forward. It takes time for you to become used to doing something new every single day, but once that time comes around, it’ll be natural for you!
Don’t let a setback stop you.
Maybe you fail during the first month of 2020. Don’t let this stop you. You still have 11 months to go! Start fresh in February and keep pushing to hit the final end of the goal that you set for yourself.
Hitting your year-end goals is always going to be a mental push. Stay focused and keep pushing forward and you will be sure to reach your large and small goals this upcoming year. Remember to reward yourself for reaching your short-term goals, create measurable and realistic goals and be communicative with those around you and you’ll be sure to kill it this year!
