Annie Lenox and Dave Stewart.

Eurythmics was a British pop duo consisting of members Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. Guitarist Dave Stewart, after a brief experience with Longdancer (band that recorded two albums: If it was so simple, from 1972, and Trailer for a good life, from 1973, joined Annie Lenox, Scottish singer and keyboardist from Aberdeen, and guitarist Pete Coombes, to form a new group, The Catch, which, after the making of a single in 1977 named Borderline for the lowercase Logo Records, became The Tourists, welcoming drummer Jim Toomey and bassist Eddy Chin.

The name

The name of the group comes from the word Eurythmy (in Latin eurythmĭa), whose roots come from the Greek (Well, good and Rythmes) referring to the correspondence that is in each of the parts to produce a work of art musically.

The beginning

Stewart and Lennox were both previously in The Tourists, where they recorded three albums and broke up in 1980. At the same time, the relationship between Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox also suffered, and they abandoned their life as a couple.

But, musically speaking, Annie and Dave were made to work together. Therefore, they reunited in a new musical project: Eurythmics. The duo was formed in 1981 in Wagga Wagga, Australia. Dave did the composing and Annie the acting. With the support of the RCA, they record a first album, entitled In The Garden, with which they toured through their country to get the band to know.

In 1983 they recorded a new work, entitled Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), which turned out to be a great success, reaching number one in the charts and for which they obtained a gold record.

ROCK

In 1985, Eurythmics publishes Be Yourself Tonight, in which they abandoned electronic music somewhat, opting for a more rock style. This album was followed in the following years by works such as Revenge and Savage, the latest work that delves into disco music.

The end

In 1989 they published what would be the last studio work of Eurythmics, which bears the title of We Too Are One. From that moment on, both Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart began their respective solo careers, although they would reunite in 1991 to record a ‘greatest hits’ album with its best songs. In 1999 they reunited to record a new work together, entitled Peace, but those who expected one of the most successful couples of the eighties to return to the music scene, were left with the desire. Peace was a one-off collaboration of two old friends.

The logo

Eurythmics’ original logo.

The original logo is simple and minimalist design with some details that make the eye look to certain points. The red star is usually associated with communist ideology, but is also used as a purely socialist symbol in the 21st century.

Remade logo.

The remake of the original logo recalls the real meaning of the band’s name: Eurithmy. It wants to show the dynamic of music and the ensemble of harmony. It goes to all those things that want to separate but aren’t able to. How love can separate but also stick a group. How flexible love makes music.
