Five tech experiences you’ll only find in Silicon Valley
The Tech Museum of Innovation in downtown San Jose is home to unique exhibits and experiences.
Inside The Tech, visitors discover three floors worth of unique experiences. It’s a must-do attraction for anyone who wants a true taste of the best of Silicon Valley culture.
You can see for yourself and plan your visit to the place that inspires innovators of all ages.
Imagine if there were a way to bring your LEGO creations to life as a kid. It may sound like science fiction, but it’s an experience you’ll find at The Tech.
Animaker was one of five finalist for a South by Southwest innovation award for creative uses of artificial intelligence. Visitors build one of nine animals out of LEGO blocks and then 3D scan their creation. That high-tech scan is analyzed and a computer guesses the animal you built. Finally, you get to choose a pose and custom colors for your animal — like a purple ballerina rhino — and then release it into a giant digital jungle.
Fly like a bird through the Manhattan skyline or soar above the clouds in Birdly, a first-of-its-kind flying simulator. When you flap your wings to fly faster or dive between skyscrapers, you’ll actually feel the wind on your face. All in all, it’s the VR experience that best captures the dream of flight.
The Tech is just one of two places in North America where you’ll find this full-body VR experience.
3. Body Worlds Decoded
Millions and millions of people have seen the Body Worlds exhibit as its traveled to museums around the world. In 2018 it returned to The Tech, but with a unique Silicon Valley twist.
Not only are there the world-famous plastinated specimens, but there’s also an only-at-The Tech augmented reality experience in Body Worlds Decoded. Hold up a tablet and see digital hearts beating, pieces of the skull come together before your eyes and a sea of red blood cells floating directly in front of you. It’s a must-see stop for anyone interested in how the body works or looking for the perfect Instagrammable moment to make their friends jealous.
4. IMAX Dome Theater
Seeing a film in an IMAX Dome Theater is a bucket list item for film buffs. The technical aspects alone are amazing — a four-story screen combined with 13,000 watts of surround sound that literally surrounds the audience with the careful positioning of six enormous speakers.
The Tech took its theater one step further when it upgraded to the world’s first laser projector for an IMAX dome. This means sharper pictures and truer colors. It all adds up to one of the most innovative film experiences out there.

5. Making with Microbes
The BioTinkering Lab at The Tech is an evolving hands-on makerspace with DIY biodesign activities and explorations of new biotechnology. Visitors get to use real lab tools, create objects with living things and explore bioengineered organisms.
The latest experiment is Making with Microbes, which uses a unique biomaterial grown with the help of visitors to The Tech. A community of tiny living organisms manufacture a biomaterial after getting their marching orders from scientists of all ages. Visitors then use this colorful, organic material to create their own one-of-a-kind souvenir.
