The Veterans Collective (TVC) is proud to share that we’ve hit another significant milestone in our efforts to build a Veteran-serving community here in Los Angeles!

TVC, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, and CORE Companies recently broke ground on five new buildings that will provide housing and services to Veterans and their families at the West LA VA North Campus.

On June 27, TVC partners and elected officials celebrated the groundbreaking of five buildings at the West LA VA North Campus.

We’ve already taken major strides in housing our Veterans. To date, more than half of the 1,200 planned units of Veteran housing on the North Campus are already finished or under construction. TVC partner Thomas Safran & Associates recently opened Building 207 which is now at full capacity and home to 59 formerly unhoused senior Veterans.

Once complete, the five new facilities — Buildings 404, 402, 156, 157, and 401 — will offer 374 housing units for Veterans and their families.

While our goal is to provide much needed housing to homeless and at-risk Veterans in Los Angeles, we’re also committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of our Veterans by providing quality services, amenities, community spaces, and events.

Here’s how each new building will serve the unique needs of our Veterans:

Building 404

Featuring 67 studios and five one-bedroom units, Building 404 — being developed by Century Housing — will blend modern design with the historical fabric of the North Campus. Building 404 will serve as permanent supportive housing for chronically unhoused Veterans and Veterans ineligible for VA health care services.

The building will be LEED Gold Certified and will include solar panels to offset electricity demand.

Beyond housing, the building will offer numerous amenities, such as a reading lounge, laundry room, fitness center, bicycle storage room, and a community room with a full kitchen.

Building 402

This 120-unit facility is being developed by Thomas Safran & Associates and designed by the renowned Frank Gehry and his team at Gehry Partners. This housing facility will include 118 homes for Veteran families.

This Gehry-designed structure will also be solar-powered, and similar to its predecessor Building 207, will feature community spaces.

Buildings 156 & 157

Buildings 156 and 157 once served as medical office buildings and have been vacant for more than 50 years. Now, Century Housing is developing the buildings to serve as housing for Veterans with a total of 96 studios and 14 one-bedroom units.

35 units will house Veterans struggling with mental health issues and case management services will be provided on site to help Veterans with their individual needs.

In addition to offering amenities such as a conference room, a community room, laundry rooms, a bike storage area, and a gym, Veterans will be able to participate in nutrition and cooking classes, empowering them to prepare and enjoy healthy, home cooked meals in their new homes.

Building 401

Building 401, a CORE Companies development, will offer 75 total housing units to Veterans earning at or below the area median income, Veterans experiencing chronic homelessness, and Veterans with disabilities.

Building 401 will join Building 404 as a LEED Gold Certified property and will include a dog park. The building will also include office space for resource coordinators and case managers dedicated to connecting Veterans with critical services.

The North Campus’ comprehensive resident intake process will ensure a smooth transition into permanent housing for Veterans, including financial support for rental deposits. Residents of these new buildings will have a myriad of services and amenities right at their doorstep — from transportation to and from the community, workshops, counseling services, and so much more.

With each completed building, we’re moving a step closer to transforming the West LA VA North Campus into a thriving community. The ongoing development of these residences wouldn’t be possible without our generous donors and dedicated partners who’ve made significant investments in our Veterans Promise Campaign: Barings, California Community Reinvestment Corporation, California Department of Housing and Community Development, California Housing Finance Agency, Cedars-Sinai, Federal Home Loan Bank, Los Angeles County Development Authority, National Equity Fund, MetLife Foundation, SGC, Tunnel To Towers Foundation, The Home Depot Foundation, and Wells Fargo.

Our collaborative efforts have already made a significant impact, and with continued support, we’ll build a brighter future for our nation’s heroes.
