DAY 4 AND 5

For Thursday and Friday, we made a lot of stuff.

We were feeling a little paralyzed by the wealth of material we had at our feet. We were having so many debates and discussions about gender, sex, sexuality, history, oppression, power. There were so many tense and important issues at the core of this show.

But the complexity of these debates left us feeling a little wobbly. –There are many, many very smart, interesting people talking about these things (especially at the moment). What could we (the humble, friendly neighbourhood Wardrobe Ensemble) contribute to the conversation?

Well, for starts, I think our ambivalence is a healthy response to the material. I don’t think any of us fancy making a preachy, impassioned, simplistic work. The rocky ground that we are navigating is also incredibly fertile. We don’t want to be able to reduce our perspective into simple sound bites: porn is bad, it sucks to be a woman.

Instead we wish to explore the complexity of the sexual world in exciting and unexpected ways.

Jesse Meadows and Emily created a fantastic game in which they asked us lots of sex questions. We would organize ourselves across the room in accordance with our relationship with sex.

Interestingly- we rarely placed ourselves in positions of absolute certainty. Instead, feeling that some of us, might, perhaps, consider doing that sexual act.

There are many things that are massively wrong with sexual culture in Britain today. There are also many problems that need immediate change and that require strong action from people like ourselves. However, these things are rarely interesting in plays. Instead, it is the ambiguous, blurry things that have really got us going.

And so, it was important that we got back to making lots of stuff, very quickly. Lets make, put it up and see what makes us think and feel. Because for now, that’s all we can do.

We’ve become interested in:

A student and her English teacher.

Potential nakedness

Non-linear storytelling

Our relationship to these microphones that scatter the room.

Sometimes they reflect the inside world of the characters

Sometimes they narrate in what we’ve dubbed “God’s eye view” -this voice is filled with facts and figures of the past and future.

Dream sequences

Sexy dances

Space hoppers

Psychedelic lyrics

Literature of the past

Good sex

Bad sex

Its an exciting moment. There are so many interesting images, stories and moments emerging. As the new week arrives, we’ll start to mush these things together- see what fits where.

Lots of Love

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
