A few years ago I published a YA novelette where a 13-year-old young girl and her father go on a camping trip. She asks if they'll encounter wildlife, like a bear maybe. Her father tells her if she meets a bear, don't run because they run faster and can climb trees, but instead wave her arms, make herself look larger, and holler loudly. That night her father is injured falling down a small cliff. She then has to go back down the trail in the middle of the night by herself to get a signal on her phone to call for help. On the way she encounters a young man coming the other way on the trail. She is frightened by how he's looking at her. She hesitates and then starts to jump up and down, waving her arms, and hollering loudly. He then dashes away, and she continues down the trail and gets help for her dad.
