Finished Bhang Lassi

Bhang Lassi is a ceremonial beverage associated with and dedicated to Lord Shiva within the Hindu belief system. It’s also quite popular with travelers and backpackers looking for adventure while traveling in India. With that said, one can find many different recipes online, but I’ve put together a recipe pulling from my experience with other recipes while trying to keep historically accurate. This recording and recipe took place during the Covid19 quarantine of Spring 2020.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Bhang Lassi

Yield: 8 oz

  • ¼ oz Cannabis
  • ½ cup Water
  • 1 Cup Heavy Cream
  • ½ tbsp Coconut Milk
  • Less than ⅛ tsp ginger
  • 1 tbsp Honey
  • ½ tbsp blanched almonds
  • Scant pinch Garam Masala (see recipe below, if you don’t have this on hand)
  • ¼ tsp Grenadine
  • ½ tsp Rosewater

Instructions:

  • Break cannabis flower into small pieces, about the size of a pea
  • Preheat oven to 230 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Place cannabis flower into an oven-safe baking dish and put into the heated oven for 30 minutes
  • Bring water to a boil in a teapot, let it cool for a few minutes, and then add cannabis to it.
  • Steep for 10 minutes and strain with a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth (reserve this water(tea) for later)
  • Gradually grind the strained cannabis in a mortar and pestle along with 2 tbsp of milk — repeat this process several times until all the cream has been combined
  • Strain the cream into another vessel, and set aside
  • Repeat this process with the reserved milk and cannabis, but this time grind it along with the ginger and almonds — repeat until ingredients have been combined
  • Strain the cannabis from the cream and set aside
  • Heat up the cooled water/tea and combine with honey
  • While the infused heavy cream is still warm, pour in the grenadine and stir
  • Pour in water and rosewater, again stirring to combine
  • Combine cream with reserved cannabis tea/honey mixture
  • Top with a pinch of Garam Masala and a little Ginger, if you’re feeling fancy
  • Drink now or store in the refrigerator for up to a week

Warning: Bhang Lassi is very strong, do not underestimate its potency. I would recommend 1.5 tsp for casual/daily smokers as a starting point and work up from there. Due to the nature of consumption, your body has very little work to do and the high comes on quickly.

Easy Garam Masala Mix

Ingredients for Garam Masala
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoons ground cardamom
  • 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
