Ryujin was a major deity in the ancient Shinto religion and also played a major role in Japanese mythology. A powerful and wise divine being, Ryujin had control over the seas, storms, and fish — including marine creatures such as shrimps, crabs, and jellyfish. He was believed to live in Ryūgū-jō (Dragon Palace), an underwater crystal palace from which his power was derived.

Ryujin was viewed as one of the oldest gods in Japanese folklore and he reportedly created many islands of Japan by piling up stones with his tail. He was believed to have descended from Takamagahara (“High Plain of Heaven”) to teach humans how to govern their own lands and guide them down enlightened paths away from disaster.

As a protector of those who dove into or made offerings into the sea, Ryujin was known as Ōwatatsumi no kami (大綿津見神 “big kami of the sea”). During sacred ceremonies held at sea to curry favor from him, Ryujin transformed into a large whale-like dragon with scales so large that it had a necklace resembling a belt around its neck. It was said that if face were to look upon him then there would be sure disaster for the onlooker. He also indicated imminent storms when he presented himself as “Hachidori” (a long tailed bird).

Although not much is left today on worshiping Him apart from celebrations such as these, Ryujin is still venerated by local fisherman as an embodiment of divine protection against calamities at sea. Even after death some wish to preserve His memory and beliefs forever by having tattoos drawn depicting Him being pulled out by two dragons entwined together off Turtle Island (in Okinawan folklore) — eventually coming home through American waterscapes giving Him a new descriptive name “Dragon King of the Sea”.

Along Came a God

Ryujin was said to have a large golden palace built on the ocean floor that was filled with treasure. His servants included four divine sea creatures, including a turtle, a snake (that could also talk), a fish and a monkey-like creature named Shishinowakamaru. Ryujin’s image commonly appears on good luck charms, jewelry, and statues throughout Japan.

As high as the enchanting waves transporting Ryujin this token is designed with moon-nomics in mind.
