Colleges might not have to provide more for the money, but efforts should be made to make people more aware of what they’ll really be getting.
I have a hard time with it when colleges try to use employment metrics, etc. to justify the pursuit of a BA given that the those curriculum tend to be less practically applicable to specific post-education employment opportunities. It’s simply not that kind of learning.
Are there benefits to a liberal arts degree? Absolutely. Are those benefits worth taking on monster debt? Maybe not so much…
I’ve half-joked in the past that if the main benefits of a liberal arts degree are in critical thinking, maturity, and world view, then wouldn’t it be better to just give our kids $10,000 and have them travel the world by themselves for a couple of years? Much cheaper than college and I guarantee that the life experience and learning would be more valuable, to boot.
