The On-Demand Economy Apocalypse Is Not A Real Thing

On-demand isn’t going anywhere as a concept. People have always wanted a way to get what they want as soon as they can get it and that won’t change anytime in the future.

What will change is the recognition that an app alone does not make a sustainable business model. You can have the greatest idea and coolest app in the world but if you can’t actually execute your concept in a cost-efficient manner, then you might as well do something else.

A lot of these tech people seem to lose sight of the fact that fast delivery services aren’t tech — they’re logistic enterprises. Food service margins are already horribly thin and trying to manage the costs of a large scale logistics enterprise against that end product is a very tough proposition.

Amazon is another example, the core business isn’t tech nor retail. It’s actually logistics — the ability to store, handle, and fulfill customer orders in a cost and time efficient manner. If they can’t do that, they’re dead in the water.
