What is a future of VR?

After spending some time analyzing VR market, here are some of my notes:

1. I do not believe in video 360 °. The fact that it is now called virtual reality, simply because it shows the picture depending on the rotation of the head — completely shit. This is the same panoramic picture of the camera on a smartphone or a fish-lens. The viewer gets just more information, but that does not mean that it’s important. The task for the director/shooter is to show a certain thing in a certain «light». So a camera with video 360° is nothing more than just another camera with wide-angle lens.

2. Games, simulations, and training — here the VR’s field. The key thing is that you specifically setup time to immerse yourself in the content. This is why Sony PS VR is tearing other manufacturers in sales.

3. VR glasses — a crutch. We consume content on the way (looked-forgot) or we setup time for conscious viewing with the purpose. It means that glasses, ultimately, there should be 2 options — ultra portable (I believe that there will be a technology for viewing the VR content from the phone without glasses) and a virtual reality station for the home or workplace.

4. A stereoscopic picture is the nearest trend and future in the industry. This is the only reason why you should now wear VR glasses, not counting the second paragraph. But it’s still a vitamin, not a pill. If the glasses do not become more comfortable (p.3), the future of TVs with a 3D picture awaits it. Yes, it’s fun, but not enough to look in the locker glasses and rock the movie separately in 3D.

5. About VR cameras. Here it is necessary to divide into pseudo-VR (just 360 °) and stereoscopic 180–360° VR. Each is divided into amateur, semi-professional and professional. The first two still have a subgroup of “extreme”. There are no fundamental differences — everyone plays a price-quality-brand game in customer’s eyes. Interesting is a positioning of the Lucid VR (make an inexpensive lifestyle stereo video camera) and Hubblo PX6 (360 stereo live stream system). Hubblo, by the way, did not raise money for Indigogo in July.

6. I believe that the real virtual reality will come when there is a “3D reality” shooting system. It can look like a system of stereo cameras and location trackers in space, which gives a three-dimensional picture of reality. Further, it can be processed in a post-editor and three-dimensional visual effects added. The end viewer can experience the most real VR with artificial objects.

I think that there are 2 successful market strategies on the market for VR cameras:

1. Have a non-competitive technical advantage throughout the first year that is valuable for customers.

2. To be supercompetitive in a relatively small market where VR technology is the next (r)evolution in solving the problem.
