My Richness Is Life

How do you define Rich? Is Rich merely what’s in your bank account, or is it more? To me, being rich is more than just having a big bank account. You can be rich in the bank but poor in character. To put it simply, you can have all the wealth in the world yet still be bankrupt in your morals. In which case, no amount of money will ever be able to compensate for a poor moral compass. One of the greatest reggae artists Bob Marley was once asked in an interview, “Are you a rich man, do you have a lot of possessions?” He replied, “I don’t have that kind of richness, my richness is life”.

Many have a very narrow interpretation of richness and wealth, and merely look at being rich as having a large house and possessing all of the toys in the world. What fascinated me about Bob Marley’s response is that he understood the very essence of what true wealth is and where it derives from. The true richness lies from what is in your soul, and how you live. It doesn’t necessarily mean the materialistic aspect of it. A full, and rich life is your inner state of being and approach to life.

I’m very well aware of the fact that we need money to survive. There isn’t a doubt in my mind about it, as our society runs on trading this economic currency. Having said that, just because you may not be rich financially, or have all the possessions that you desire, it doesn’t mean that you are not Rich. As stated above, there is no amount of money in the world that can buy integrity, honesty, character and moral fiber. Perhaps, you should change your perception rich, and realize that true wealth lies within the individual and not their outside circumstances.

If you only choose to perceive rich in that narrow definition of what an individual has that may be tangible or through assets, then you have a very poor mindset. It is that very mindset that you need to alter to see rich, through a different lens. It is my hope that you can learn learn to feel rich from within, rather than only looking for richness outside of you. And like Bob find richness in the beauty of yourself, and in life.
