Most of my writings about this were ephemeral and are hard to dig up now (social media posts, etc.) but the short version is, people being able, in relatively polite company, to refer to George W. Bush as "literally Satan," to mock his occasional speech stumbles as if that were in the top ten relevant aspects of his character or qualification, and to confidently assert that he absolutely was evil and plotting and had only his own personal interest in mind when he was acting on the intelligence recommendations of both our own security services and those of Britain/Canada/Australia/etc. (re: Iraq). All of this was tacitly tolerated by the left, as far as I could see, and seems to me to have set the stage for the situation we now find ourselves in.
