Stop for a moment, take a deep breath and then feel the environment around you. What is the origin of the people in this environment? What is the nationality of the company in which you work? Where do the brands you are using come from?

It is always good to reinforce the idea that we live in a world that is increasingly borderless, which demands a more empathic attitude on our part. We can learn much more about leadership, empathy, gaming, and geopolitical than college courses. In doing so, we develop our Cultural Intelligence, which can be defined as “the ability to operate effectively between different national, ethnic, and organizational cultures.” Cultural Intelligence can increase through travel, education, and experience. Furthermore: people with high empathic capacity and high Emotional Intelligence may find it difficult to deal with different cultures. This is because their empathic listening skills are embedded within a context of their own culture.

Cultural Intelligence goes beyond understanding different cultures from our own. It includes their personal interests, understanding sociological differences that act on cultural beliefs, values and behaviors. And more:

The role of a travel consultant is broader in the sense of adding more sense to the travels you plan for each specific customer. Apart from the operational part, the consultant must present a series of techniques so that there is more meaning and meaning to the many cultures to which we are exposed.

I selected and adapted a few tips (from David Livermore’s Cultural Intelligence — Working in a World Without Borders) so that you can develop your Cultural Intelligence, even while in your hometown.

Spend at least 50% of the direct contact time you have, listening.
Look for various sources of information. Sign in to YouTube and see what people from around the world are watching.
Read a series of newspapers. What are the best selling books and box office films in London, Dubai and Moscow?
Keep your eyes open for new trends in the market, arts, theater and film.Expand your culinary horizons. Eat delicately the delicacies of different parts of the world. If possible, share your meal with someone coming from that culture and see what perspective that person can offer on that plate. Talk to Uber and Taxi drivers! Ask what their views on local events are. They know the city and they see all kinds of people. Learn from them! This is a strategy that can be applied between day to day tasks to another. With discipline, attentive gaze and focus, we gain the ability to observe what intelligence escaped us before. We take advantage of these moments to live in high performance!
