Everywhere you look it’s the return of Girl Power! With an ever-changing terrain, where do parents and educators find materials to inspire our next generation? Here are just a few favorites from my time in schools and as a public librarian:

1. A Mighty Girl

A Mighty Girl is broken out into age groups, themes, and more, making it easy to navigate. When parents ask me for resources on bullying, talking back to adults, materials on inspirational women in science, educational crafts, etc. I refer them to this site.

2. School Library Journal

School Library Journal isn’t just for librarians! This is a fantastic online and print resource for parents. All of the reviews in School Library Journal are written by teachers and children’s/teen librarians. Plus, they’re organized by grade level — taking the guess work out of finding age appropriate materials. Additionally, they have great resources on using technology for education and fun! For example check out this article on Stellar Outer Space Board and Video Games.

3. ExploreEngineering.CA

ExploreEngineering.CA is all about making engineering accessible for everyone. This website, created by Engineers Canada, is full of great activities and resources for parents and educators — helping to bring the exciting world of engineering to all ages. Looking for resources for girls, check out the Girl Guides here! For more great STEM picture books check-out Edutopia’s list on 12 Inspiring STEM Books for Girls.

4. Code Avengers & Hour of Code Activities

Looking for exciting ways to get your girls coding? Check out Code Avengers and Hour of Code Activities. Both sites are designed to help kids of all ages learn HTML, CSS & JavaScript. If you’re still not sold on the coding revolution watch this short film, Code Stars on Youtube. For the more advanced coders in your life check-out, the Youtube channel Coding is for girls. Or to learn from the pro’s in person check-out this list of programs in your area from Tech-Girls.

5. Crash Course

Learn world history from Hank & John Green (author of The Fault in Our Stars and co-hosts of the Vlogbrothers) Crash Course is filled with animations that turn complicated subjects into bite-sized information snacks. Need to learn the history of India? Wondering how statistics work? No problem, Crash Course has your back!
