One Time I Actually Gave Life Advice To Someone (And It Worked)
My friends, family, and colleagues usually ignore 99% of the advice I give. That’s why I keep quiet to myself and never form an expressive opinion about anything. People will always stay their course of action until life has a surprise for them that forces them to act otherwise.
As I was ramming through my mind to express an idea of what to create on this exact page. A doorbell interrupted my train of my thought. I answered and there was a young woman holding several flyers.
My first instinct was to close the door immediately and say, “not interested.” Door to door salesmen are the physical form of telemarketers. Then I remembered, at one time I did the same gig when I was in high school. I decided to hear her sales pitch.
She mentioned her company was Kirby vacuums. And as young, ambitious, and pretty as she was. I told her she could do much better than going door to door in a residential area getting paid peanuts to get people to buy shit they don’t need (especially being on a commission basis).Being an undergraduate at UC Davis, she has a bright future to carve her path in life and be whatever she can make of herself.
When you’re young, bright, and ambitious. You’re not a threat to anyone as you are when you cross the big stage and get handed your degree. And at the same time when I was this solicitors age, a friend of mine introduced me to the world of Amway (multi-marketing company). I didn’t know shit about the company or companies like it. Being open minded, I listened and went to my first meeting.
First it started off as an invitation to a small gathering with a powerpoint presentation then a business plan of how to make residual income. It was always a selling point of getting you and a friend to attend this revolutionary conference of epic proportions, hoping to bring more people, and create more signups to expand your business (sorry there’s no such thing as a free lunch).
Eventually, after a duration of being amongst this business. I made my escape from this organization and truly realized the world of charlatans that live among us. One important thing I learned from one of my favorite writers is that “if you do not call fraud, you are a fraud yourself.”
A couple days later I received a message from this sales rep I encountered from Kirby. She mentioned she was done with the organization and seeking other forms of work after being paid so little for so much effort.
In that, I learned an important lesson too. When we stop looking for answers, the answers often find us. Even if it means appearing right on our own doorstep.
I hope if I knock on your door one day I’ll have an answer for you too.
