We all have the urge to share with the world, or our close friends what we are up to or have been doing with our lives. So why not post our photos and current status on a social media platform so that everyone knows what’s going on within our lives. Before we venture that far it is important that we know the many different privacy settings or things that we can do in order to maintain our privacy while managing our Facebook accounts. At least being aware of the basic steps needed to be taken in order to do so. I’ll provide pictures to help the aid in locking up our Facebook privacy. Here’s some basic privacy settings that should be activated for your Facebook profile.

Finding the privacy settings

First things first, we need to find where this can be done by locating the settings button

Who can see my postings

Next step would be selecting who you want to see the things you post, whether that be family, friends, close enemies or everyone else in the world. This sets who your Facebook audience will be. To do this, select the edit to change who you want to see your post. Selecting either ‘Public’ this option will allow everyone even those not on your friends list see your post(strangers). ‘Friends’ this allows only the individuals on your friends list to see what you post (pals/buddies). ‘Only Me’ this will obviously only allow you to see the post that you make.

Who can contact you?

This lays down the line of who can send you friend requests. I’m not to sure about anyone else but I like to keep the unknowns at a distance. When this is left at ‘Everyone’ that means that strangers can send you friend request, it is important to limit the amount of people that can do this. Unless you want 1000 friend request in one day…then do you. The other option provided is ‘Friends of Friends’ this is your friend’s friends. Basically any friend that your other friends have on their Facebook can request to be your friend.

Who can find you

This is pretty much is connected to the previous step. This controls who can look you up or search for you on Facebook and how this is done; either by phone number, email, or timeline name. This helps to contain that Ex who like to snoop on their previous partner profile. This section helps to limit who has access to do this, after all we only want our friends to be doing the snooping right? This section also control if you want search engines outside of Facebook (such as Google) to be able to be used to find your Facebook profile. If this is not what is wanted just select ‘No’.

The Timeline

The last privacy setting that should be look at is the Timeline and Tagging section. This section controls who can add to your timeline, who can see what you tag to your timeline and managing the tags that others add you to. This is another important step to privacy because you never know what others might want to post to your timeline and tag you in. Others might post something that you do not agree with and tag you to this or add it to your timeline. By using this section, you can monitor and limit who has power to do this.

As we continue to use the many different platforms of social media, always take a minute to view the privacy and setting sections. This will help ensure that what you want private is kept that way.
