Going 45 minutes beyond the hustle bustle of Johannesburg is an ancient, natural wonder that seems to be belonging to the world of boondocks. It is called the Cradle of Humankind and it is an attraction that you can’t afford to miss at any cost when you are in Johannesburg. Though i had been hearing about the Cradle of the Humankind since years but was not really very thrilled to go as i was not actually keen to know the history of humankind or story of human evolution. I did not like the subject in my school days too but the way it was depicted here at the Cradle was something most amazing and interesting. The way they described how we evolved millions of years back and every detail of the history that is hidden between the layers of the rocks was very fascinating. A lot more was added to our already existing knowledge.

The two main attractions in that area are Maropeng and the Sterkfontein Caves. The uniqueness of the Maropeng includes overview of the last few years along with a fun ferry ride through the four elements of air, water, earth and fire and also an interactive exhibition for children and adults. The Sterkfontein Caves offer a tour inside them, along with a guide to update you about the fossils that are embedded in the walls of the caves and the facts collected from previous expeditions.

The most important part of the Cradle was the Paleo Tours which we opted for, on the second day of our trip. They let us visit an excavation site that was live and meet the scientist over there personally who was working on site. Such a discussion was more befitting and informative. We were at a liberty to ask the questions that aroused in our mind. After a deep knowledge ignition, it was a time for some recreation and what could be better than a hot air balloon safari if you are lucky enough to find some nearby. We also went for a ride through the various nature reserves and abundantly enjoyed the night camps at the Cradle Forest.

In all, the Cradle of Humankind is the awesome place to visit and connect to our ancestors, enjoy forest camps and balloon rides with family and experiencing wild life from near. I suggest, just take a holiday break from your mundane regime.
