It’s trivially easy to get a file listing — it’s getting it as text that can be put into a document…
Steve Dutch

I just checked OS X on the file listing:

  1. Copy list of files in any Finder window
  2. Open a text editor or other application (such as BBEdit, Text Wrangler, or TextEdit with a window in Plain Text)
  3. Paste. The file listing will be straight text.

No ls > listing.tx commands used. (And I learned a new thing which I might not have bothered to learn otherwise.)
