I think it definitely can work both ways. I greatly admire some artists who are simply brilliant at squeezing beauty from raw materials, without much regard for common idioms. At the same time, it’s amazing how some musicians can simply plug into any context and create something worth listening to, because they understand what’s going on in terms of common musical structures and systems.

The reward of the former is unparalleled and sometimes rapturous uniqueness—but it risks being inaccessible. The reward of the latter is communal resonance—but it risks being stale.
