Why CMO’s Make 100X What You Do
Have you ever wondered why executives make 10X or sometimes 100X what their employees make?
What makes them so special? Why should they deserve a huge multiple of what their employees earn? They work the same amount of hours. They’re not geniuses — they actually seem like pretty normal people.
Example: The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) vs. The Accountant.
The CFO of a company makes a huge multiple of what the accountant makes. The CFO isn’t necessarily smarter and doesn’t necessarily know more about accounting. But what makes the CFO more “valuable” and harder to replace than the accountant?
Meta-Level Understanding.
The CFO can see the financials of the company from a 10,000-foot overview and understand how all the components work together. She can see how all the teams interact and can make executive financial decisions based on all the moving parts. The accountant, on the other hand, is highly specialized in one thing: accounting.
This applies to the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) as well. She has a higher-level understanding of all the marketing aspects of a company. She may not necessarily write the best blog posts or design the most beautiful banner ads, but she has an understanding of all the moving parts of the company’s marketing machine, how to fix it, where it can be optimized, and where to remove unnecessary parts. She understands what systems need to be put in place and where new talent should be plugged in to make the output more high quality.
But how can a CMO manage all of this and stay mentally stable?
The “marketing funnel.”

The marketing funnel is how large companies manage all the sales and marketing activities in their business and understand what tactics are being used, where they are being used, when they are being used, and why they are being used.
The CMO is able to orchestrate the blog content creators, the social media strategists, the banner ad creators, the SEO team, the branding team, etc. All of the marketing teams are quite literally their orchestra and she is the conductor.
If marketing funnels are so important, why do you see more material on “How To Create The Perfect Blog Post”?
Simply put, funnel design is not an employable skill. It is much easier to find a job as a content creator, social media intern, or a Facebook ad manager. It’s very rare that you find a job posting for a “Chief Marketing Officer” as they are usually hired from within and already have an understanding of their company’s marketing systems.
What is a marketing funnel and how does it actually work?
It’s surprisingly a very simple concept and easy to understand.
