Timely post, Steve. More discussions like this one are needed to help founders survive the transition from startup ‘mode’ in search of problem/solution fit and early traction to high growth ‘mode’ in an effort to exploit product/market fit. It’s been my experience that the bigger issue to the number of employees is the rate of growth. Reaching 40 employees in 12 months and growing in the 3x, 3x, 2x, and 2x model VCs value most is far more difficult that achieving the 40-employee threshold in 8 years.
