Where to go to escape the cold?

In the middle of winter, it’s common to think about places to warm up. I decided to explore the NOAA Global Surface Summary of the Day public dataset in Google BigQuery to find out where the hottest places on Earth are (at least according to this dataset).

I wrote this query to find the highest high temperatures.

Mapping the station numbers to the station list provided by NOAA, we see that the highest temperature recorded was 136.8° F in Dalbandin, Pakistan.

You can run the BigQuery query in this data doodle for free, no credit card required, with 1TB of free queries per month.
