The answer is starting us in the face, if only we are willing to see it. Employers threats of wage cuts have no teeth if the laborer doesn’t require an employer to generate an income. Once the laborer was unable to translate their labor into capital directly, they were subject to the whim and will of the employer. This proposition has a direct and obvious answer that is antithetical to the modern ideology of central authority.
