Ductless Mini Splits: Single Zone VS Multi Zone

No matter how familiar you are with ductless mini splits, you might not understand the difference between single zone and multi zone units. While both can be used to keep you comfortable, each type of unit has particular advantages and disadvantages. Before purchasing a unit, it’s important to understand these disparities so that you can make an informed decision.

At Titan AC, we sell single zone and multi zone mini split units. We want you to understand how these units work. Keep reading to find out the similarities and differences between them.

Multi Zone Ductless Mini Splits

When it comes to ductless mini splits, multi zone units are made to serve two to eight rooms. They have a slight disadvantage because the compressor has to work for multiple masters, making it difficult to optimize. Typically, multi zone units come with two to four indoor units, matched to a single outdoor unit. While multi split units save space outdoors, they are also harder to install than their single zone counterparts. With multi split systems, all indoor units must be attached to the same outdoor unit positioned at a fixed location, which could require extended piping throughout the house.

Single Zone Ductless Mini Splits

Compared to their multi zone counterparts, single zone ductless mini splits are much easier to install. A single zone mini split pairs one indoor unit with a single outdoor unit. As a result, these units can only service one room at a time. With single splits, the outdoor unit for each indoor unit can be located close together, allowing for simpler and shorter piping throughout the house.

Now that you know the difference between single zone and multi zone units, you should be able to choose the ductless mini split that best suits your needs. Armed with the knowledge from this article, you can be confident no matter your choice.
