How to Prepare Your Air Conditioner for Summer
Florida heat is legendary. Imagine this: you’re sweating under the sweltering sun. You come inside, prepared to crank the air condition — only to find out the unit won’t work. You’re going to be miserable unless you get your air running again.
In order to avoid suffering from a scenario like this one, make sure your unit works before you desperately need it.
Here’s how to prepare your air conditioner for summer.

- Clean or replace the filters. You should be doing this often, but if you can’t remember the last time you changed the filters, now is the perfect time to do it. If you’re not cleaning your filters regularly, they could become clogged with dust and your airflow will be restricted.
- Clean the condenser coils. Ideally, your condenser will be protected by a tarp or some other covering designed to keep out leaves, dirt and other outdoor debris. If you haven’t kept the condenser covered, you need to make sure to clean the coils to keep the unit running smoothly.
- Clear out debris. In addition to cleaning the coils, you should also make sure the condenser base and drain are clean and clear of debris. At this point, you should also cut or trim any weeds or grass that could interfere with the unit.
- Check the coolant lines. The tubes or lines of refrigerant that run from the evaporator inside to the condenser outside should be covered with foam insulation. If this insulation is cut, frayed or missing, replace it as soon as possible.
- Test the unit. In order to check if your unit is good to go, start by making sure your thermostat is switched to OFF. Then, turn on the power and switch it to COOL. If everything goes according to plan, your unit should be up and running!
