Looking back at Teal

Before society ruins body image.

While listing things I was passionate about at the age of 10, looks, clothing make-up, body size or anything in this category did NOT appear. At the age of ten I was interested in animal welfare, computer games, netball and drawing. I didn’t care less what brand I was wearing let alone what anyone else thought of how I looked, ofcourse I took this feeling for granted back then but now I look up to my former attitude.

To make an honest confession, currently I spend far too much time worrying about what people will think of me, deciding what I will wear, or comparing my looks to others. It’s a hassle lets be honest, it’s a never ending cycle of being unsatisfied with your looks. I know others of you feel and think this too. According to statistics 91% of women and girls are unhappy with their bodies and how they look, adding to this number will be the fact that only 4% of women naturally possess the hourglass type body (big boobs and butt with a tiny waist) which is constantly portrayed in the media as how you should look.

A huge attack from the media starts primarily after the age of 10. Girls are bombarded with the medias directions on how to look, it’s brainwashing in the way that you can barely escape it, it’s in billboards, tv shows, adverts, branding and music. You’re expected to be skinny, with a tiny waist and a gap between your thighs, with long glossy hair and flawless skin with long eyelashes, full lips and sparkling teeth and toned with a medium skin tone and while you’re at it BE YOURSELF WHY DON’T YOU!!! Society’s idea of so called “perfection” is un-realistic and un-retainable which is why so many young girls struggle to reach their nirvana of “ bodily perfection”.

At the age of ten I didn’t care what shape my body was or whos style I should be following, I was able to focus on more interesting and intelligent things which I’m sure made my PERSONALITY more attractive (the more important thing!!) At primary school I talked to my friends about dreams and pets and climbing trees and laughed at immature jokes, I didn’t chat about what brand of make-up I was wearing, what ‘imperfection’ I had noticed most recently or what part of my body I’d change first, all boring and pointless conversations may I add!

I think for once it’s time for us to be kind to ourselves, look in the mirror and think of your body as no more and no less than it is. It is exactly what it is and it’s able to complete everything it needs to. That is PERFECTION, being content with your own body is PERFECTION no matter what shape or size it is. Forget the judgement, nothing on your body is too big or too small it’s just in proportion for being your own personal vessel. Don’t compare yourself to any celebrity or friend. Embrace the 10 year old in yourself who doesn’t give a second thought to how they look, they don’t try to alter their appearance and they’re all the more happier for it.

Fuck you society you repulsive monster. We aren’t ugly, You are.
